I have a basic background in digital photography but always loved film and want to get into it.

Can someone recommend a film camera for me?

>want a camera that I can use professionally as well
>looking to do conceptual / fashion / fine art photography

Dont know about prices, but its not a poorfag territory. European cameras have a meme tax, as well as most mamiyas. Have a look at japanese ebay, adding import tax and parcel cost is often considerably cheaper. I bought gx680 with lens for 500usd delivered to europe while some poor idiot was trying to sell his for about 1800usd

Yea pretty much all of those things point to medium format film. I don’t shoot MF though so I couldn’t tell you what’s good for under $400 USD.

I have a nice minty FM2N that I got for $375 and I love it. Obviously it’s not MF and it’s more of a hobby camera IMO, but I share its lenses with my D4 so I didn’t have to buy anything for it other than the body.

Its really no-brainer with what you said in the op. But protip: learn to meter, either with a proper meter or with your digital body. Always check ten times aperture, shutter, focus. I have shot two rolls with f45 thinking im on f5.6. Take your time.

I got a Mamiya 645 pro TL for about that. HIGHLY recommended, it’s great. If AE isn’t a concern I think the C330 had a wide and you can find those pretty cheap.

I would get a Mamiya 645E, the glass is super sharp and hit has a built in meter. I bought mine for $350 with the 80mm 2.8.
If you had more to spend I'd say to go for a hasselblad 500cm since it's a bit more durable and the WLF is really nice to use for portraits. Plus if you get tired of it you can easily sell it for what you bought it for. But as far as optical quality, you won't be missing anything with the Mamiya.

The 645E doesn't have the ability to use a WLF because the prism isn't removable but all the other 645's have removable prisms and can work with the WLF

I found mine locally but I think if you ebay snipe it using gixen you could probably find one for $375 if you're patient. It seems they went up in price a little since I bought mine 2 years ago. I also had an opportunity to buy an RB67 at the time but it's way too big, I'd never want to carry something like that around.

The question is: Are you in a hurry getting a camera? Because especially for medium format if you don't have to get a camera right now you can get a better deal by waiting a bit. Even though analog prices are rising it doesn't mean you have to get something at once. I would almost recommended you try to get a GSW690 (if you can live with a fixed wide angle lens and rangefinder focus system) but they are a little bit more pricey than 400/350. If you want the best quality/resolution you should look for cameras that shoot 6x7, 6x8 or 6x9. 6x4.5 camera's tend to be a bit cheaper but these days I would just get a camera that you really like instead of having that nagging feeling that you wanted something else but you wanted to save 100 bucks.

i chose my camera based on ability to have an electronic shutter cable attached and a mirror lockup with a button.

No one is debating that you NEED a high end camera to take the majority of photos most be take. Most hobby / street photography can be done on the IPhone.

But for the pros? For industries where top, top quality is paramount? For photographers that want as crisp an image as they can get?

You need a certain standard of camera.
