How do you people use your telephoto prime lenses if not for portraiture/sports?
I just got my first short telephoto (50mm on a crop) and it already feels completely unusable outside of shooting specific subjects.

Very nice picture frend, you should calm down a bit. I'm just curious how people designate lenses in the 50-100mm range to be usable for casually shooting.

I's easier to shoot at a longer focal length. Wider angle needs you to be more careful about composition, and have a longer depth of field.
Just practice until your used to it.
You should have got an 85 or a 100 since your kit-lens goes at 50mm.

I did some tests before buying a 50mm. I went out for a walk and only used my kit lens at full zoom (55mm). It was awkward as shit at first but I got used to it.
Not long after that it became ny standard focal length. My everyday lens.

tele is my favorite focal length for landscape, i dunno what you're talking about

I used to be all about wide-angle lenses, but after buying and using some 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses, my photos over the last few years have gradually shifted towards 70mm and higher. It allows you to isolate a single suject from a scene, and pick out small details that would otherwise be lost or not as apparent using a wide-angle lens. Once you get used to isolating your subjects and choosing only the interesting things to shoot, wide angle lenses become far less appealing. I shoot >35mm at least 5x more than I do <35mm at this point

Telephotos are amazing for landscape work (intimate landscape genre ala Eliot Porter) and architecture. The key is picking out details and making use of the faux compression which sometimes gives almost flat, painterly results. The shallow depth of field is the trickiest part.

You're thinking about your lens wrong op. If you've got a 50 on a crop sensor then you should have good field of view for portraiture, street shooting, product photography, and just any general situation where you need to get just a little more detail. Honestly though, a far more versatile lens for you would be a 35 or a 24.

your post answers your own question. use it to compress the subject and background for a photo that looks like nothing you see in real life. It may take a little walking to get the composition just right, but well worth it.

When I started shooting I did what everyone does: bought a bunch of Soviet meme lenses on ebay. The only one that showed up within 3 fucking months was the Jupiter 37a 135mm f/3.5, so my telephoto rite of passage was exclusively using it for 6 straight weeks on an APSC sensor like a retard. By the time my other meme lenses (MIR-1, Helios 44) arrived, I'd fallen in love with the tele look, even more so after upgrading to FF. That Jupiter-37 is still always in my bag.

Anyone tried the Jupiter 9 85mm? The early builds in particular (late 60s/early 70s) seem real nice from what I've seen.

Not him but I test new lenses and bodies at the zoo. Better than pictures of leafs and cats. Provides moving subjects and indoor/outdoor shooting conditions. I know the limits of my gear because of my local zoos.

Telephoto lenses are one of the reasons I shoot with an interchangeable lens camera. Most shots nowadays are taken with a camera phone with a 28mm lens. Shooting with a telephoto makes for a unique perspective especially when I travel. I enjoy taking photos of churches so in a way a telephoto lens lets me take detailed shots of statues etc.

Also I use a telephoto lens when shooting product photography.
