That's the ancestor of the flippy screen. You can flip the lens around and use it for selfies or video.

Able to angle grip side to get better view of screen.
Lens side has extra depth for zoom mechanism without extending beyond body.
Lens can be angled for high/low shots.
Folds up to be (slilghtly more) compact.

The Illum had a neat ability where you could do a "green screen" effect without a green screen. Just toss out data outside of a defined distance.

Yeah I still have mine laying around, It was one of my first serious trial at digital since I was still shooting film. My first was not digital but the Mavica for the laughs of it. The 990 was one reason I went with Nikon for a digital slr. That and Pentax was dragging on it. I kept my MX with the 35mm and sold the rest while the selling was good, just like when I sold all of my developing, and printing gear.

It's 110, so it probably sits behind the lens like normal. The more interesting thing is how they crammed an SLR setup into it.

i have one and the ergonomics are honestly pretty great. The optical viewfinder is also excellent for a point and shoot in terms of size and minimal parallax errors.

The separation of lens and screen make it sort of like a flip-out screen in terms of functionality, you can shoot it at waist level and look straight down at the screen, or do front facing lens etc

Panasonic D-Snaps had some interesting designs.

There's a new in the box SV-AS10S (the most plain jane of the lot) in the local thrift store right now. I'm debating trying to grab it when it goes half-off this week ($20.) It's been in their display case, so hopefully hasn't been too manhandled by those knuckle draggers who insist on ripping open every damn thing they touch.
