Dear thread viewers, I'm starting this thread off with what is probably my best set of photographs that I've taken to date. I hope you agree. I was quite confident about these when I came home from shooting them, but my confidence isn't so strong now that it's been a few days. They still hold up well though, and have helped inspire me some. More photos will come in the future. Oh anon, I don't tthink that's a fuck-up! Whether the depth of field is too narrow is a matter of debate, and quite subjective. Not every photo needs to be sharp across the frame. Narrow depth of field works here because it drifts softer as we move away from the mass of leaves toward the water where we have just a few leaves floating, and the reflection of the trees. We don't need to see these in perfect detail, just enough to see that they are indeed there. The attention is on the mass at the bottom of the frame, and the stragglers and their origins are on the periphery, present but not a focal point. That's what I wanted from this picture. It's a drift from solid and together, to apart and less-defined. I'd like to hear your thoughts to the contrary.

I had frankly forgotten that the trees were not in focus. The issue was one of practical limitations with handholding and depth of field. I needed, for the composition, to get close enough that my depth of field didn't really allow for both the fence and the trees to be in focus. As such, I chose the fence since it occupies most of the frame, and the trees serve only as splotches of colour! I should reshoot, but I'm running out of time as the leaves start to fall. Woe!

These were all taken with with a 50mm lensé, which on a crop sensor gives a fixed 75mm equivalent focal length. Now that you mention it I may consider a tele zoom since I greatly prefer that range to the wide angles; I bought a 23mm lens as well, which gives a 35mm equivalent focal length that I just can't get the hang of. This makes us brothers. Your impression was absolutely correct. 75mm is such a wonderful focal length, don't you think? I can understand why you'd want that, but I'm trying to accomplish the opposite. I'm removing context on purpose so you can only get it through indication rather than direct presentation. You could call it abstraction. The point is to have the frame plain but very specific, or nothing specified to where it feels like something, but you know it really isn't. This is to convey a feeling of emptiness

I agree with your comments here a little less than your previous ones. This is natural, but there are some arguments I'd like to make:
>>3745911 >>3745913 >>3745913 I just simply don't agree that monochromatic subjects should be shot in black and white. There slight nuances of colour that would be lost, since this is not purely textural work
>>3745912 I can see what you mean about competition here. My intent was to have this as a presentation of the striations running horizontally across the frame: bands of colour and texture. Your eye does tend to stick with the trees at the top of the frame since that's where there's the most variation within the texture, and the greatest contrast in values from the most of the frame. Possibly it's a similar reason why you're getting so tripped up with this one
>>3745915 ; the objects are elements of the frame, and not the objects themselves. Perhaps I need to just step up my game so this is clearer
>>3748083 Here I wasn't so much aiming to directly juxtapose the window with vines as to show that the window is hidden

Selective color guy? Canon M50, that's haram.
Leaf anon? Nikon D3300, no way you're going to bump something like that.
Digishit thread? As if you'd waste time on someone who shoots with a Konica Minolta from the 2000s
Military photo thread? Heh, those Canon faggots and their 1D X fuckhuge cameras.
You pretend you're an anti-gearfag but you're actually the worst kind of gearfag, a brandfag who thinks a turd taken with a Fuji is good because of the camera that took it.

Thank you! I technically pre-process with my Fujifilm® digital camera. I bump colour +2, drop highlights -2 and shadows -1, if I recall. I don't have my camera in-hand to confirm. Film sim is ProNeg Standard, I believe. I generally also keep exposure compensation at +1 stop, and white balance as accurately as I can for ambient light. I don't like to talk about processing, but it does help me achieve a look I like. It does lend something to the image.

Dear thread viewers I am getting wifi installed in my new apartment tomorrow afternoon, and I will then upload more photos that I took and which were taken by me. This is a bump to keep the thread up until then. I haven't been able to get out and take and to be taking more photos since I injured myself somewhat recently. A damn shame! There has been some nice light happening, and we got snow. These things would make for some fun photo-taking experiences, but alas I cannot avail. The only shots I've taken in the past couple have weeks have been inside, and it's rather depressing to think about. My skills have almost certainly declined due to lack of practice; there may be no True Art for a while, instead being replaced by Sorry Attempts Thanks for coming, Happy holidays, Enjoy your vacation, Have fun with the kids! I will reply to you both together since I don't know how to do it separately; the dichotomy of your two responses is too strong! I think you're both dealing in superlatives, and that something else may come of it if you step back. As such I invite (and indeed request!) that you each analyse one of the photos in the thread. Mind that I have a good idea which ones are good and which ones aren't! I hope I will be reading your responses soon

The first, second, fourth, and fifth photos are all very pleasing composure. Please try playing with dof and obstructive-foreground, Stephen, your photos may gain much in the way of personality if you do.
Anonymous
>>3766470 Dear anon,
I will play around some more with obstructive foreground, thank you for your suggestion.I'm not sure what I would do to mess around with depth of field though. I generally go for a large DoF to, funnily enough, give my images less depth. Ideally they would read 2-dimensionally, but I don't know if this communicates well. Thank you for your comments.

He is a five foot tall troglodyte with sharp canines that subsists on lichen and dog urine. Unfortunately, he left a disgusting hat that was infused with his deeply unpleasant aroma behind, at my apartment, which I had to burn. He is neither a university student nor legally permitted to approach women.

>>3750544 great thread, OP. your photos range from great to not so great (i'm sure you're a smart enough cookie to which is which) but your chipper attitude is certainly exemplar for the rest of the board. I recently started using a 35mm equiv. lens myself and i recommend you stick with it wholeheartedly for the kinds of compositions you're going for. it's a very rewarding focal length to get the hang of. all the best.
