1.4 and wider is only good for full body shots. For closer portrait shots you want inbetween 2 and 3.5 else you might get a lot of parts of the face out of focus.

It depends on the sensor. If its cropped then the bokeh will be reduced therefore shit.
So yeah 2 can be very limiting.

Because every retard in the world can set the aperture to 1.7 and shoot a boring subject. The creamy background still sticks out of the pile of shit of smartphone images and people recognize it as a picture taken with a """good""" camera.
Prominent example is the "hold gf's hand while she's walking away from you and the background of *touristic spot* is blurred" trope. a good composition and seperation of the background using colors, space etc. is much more important and harder to achieve.

Unironically, there are people out there who believe they can tell the difference between f1.4 and f2.

That is only one stop of difference between the two.

Anyone who knows a little bit about photography can tell you that nobody cares what lens, camera, flash, format, sensor, you're using.

The people who care about all those irrelevant things browse /p/ and troll on threads like this.

Go to 500px and see all the portrait pictures taken wide open with a full frame digital camera. The only way to make these HALF interesting is by having a naked woman, and even then the photos look like over edited garbage.

Anyways, to the topic - i myself invested years and some bucks into gear and shooting and all i want - is to actually HAVE a camera near me as i dont carry my dslr with me all the time.

I can differentiate my own lenses. There's usually a very noticeable difference on all bright lenses from it's widest aperture, to slightly closed down aperture. Say, you've f1.4 lens, it'll usually be somewhat soft, exhibit some fringing on f1.4, but at f2, all of that will already be better. Same will happen on f2 lens. It'll be better at f2.8. Now, if the talk is just about depth of field, then that part will be impossible to see.

Real photographers, the kind of people that end up in books you should read, never cared that much for blurred background or extreme bokeh, and background can really help "making" a picture, even more a portrait. When you understand this and stop caring about 1.4/1.2, you're already one step beyond that mass of faggots
