Is it dumb for me to drop DSLRs competently? I own a Rebel T6i, but I want to go pure 35mm from here on out. Sure, it'll cost more, but I don't mind. Instead of blindingly taking 100 pictures on a digital with only one or two that I like, I feel like film will force me to think ahead on what it is I'm going for. Each picture should be something worthwhile to me.

I'll be shooting on a Nikon F5, and as a backup camera a Fujifilm X10 point and shoot. I feel like those are the only two cameras I'll ever need in my bag. Would it be unwise to go this way?

I have a DSLR and think ahead about what im doing usually. Still end up taking a lot of pictures because I can see if what I meant to do worked, though. However, it depends what you want to do with the camera. What do you usually take pictures of?

I enjoy taking pictures of people. Helps me with my anxiety since it gives me a reason to associate with people. Whenever I take a photo of someone, they just love it. I don't think of myself as anything great with a camera, but it makes me happy knowing that people like my photos.

I took some portraits with my F5 and it was just lovely. 50mm lens and 400tx worked well. I have a roll of Porta 400 loaded in my camera, so I'm just waiting for the opportunity to use it.

Get yourself a 512mb sd card and shoot raw if you like the thrill of having only a few shots and making them count.

That's a meme. You'll take your snapshits and feel good about them. Then two weeks later when you've finished your film you take it in excitedly waiting for the results. But when you get them all you can do is wish you'd shot the subject from the other angle instead.

Cover all your bases. It's much easier to delete the crap that didn't work than it is to go back and reshoot because you made a crap decision on the day.

It's completely up to you. I used to only use film but then a little less than a year ago I got a digital camera to convert film to digital and 99% of the time I just use digital now.
I'm tempted to go back to film though because It's simpler and easier to travel with (and x mount lenses I want are a pain in the ass to find without ordering online).

I'm always about saving money and getting the best with what you have at that moment, so what helped me a little is literally restricting myself to 27 pictures max for that day. It helped me, and may not help you. That being said, nothing is dumb when it comes to personal creativity imo, unless it's literally hurting/endangering someone.

Here is what the true comparison between film and digital looks like, objectively.
Literally any other depiction is post-processed and edited in ways to deceive you. Do not believe the lies.

The only "true color" film is positive film. Color negative requires lots of editing to produce a lifelike looking image and contrast/saturation boosts are included. Comparing a processed finalized film scan to a flat raw looking digital is not a genuine comparison.

I dropped film and sold my rb67 a few years ago and it made me go out and shoot more and life a lot easier with less expense and weight. Everything improved instead of trying to make sure I get good shots on it as well etc.

I'm thinking about just shooting some 35mm b&w though.

if you don't know how to make an exposure and print a photograph without a computer, you're not a photographer.

to answer your question op; the only thing that's gonna make you better at taking photos is practicing taking good photos. if film helps you do that, then great. personally I use film because it's more fun. making exposures with film can be a lot more engaging than digital if you let it be, and wet printing is ten times more fun than making exposures.

Let me just state right out of the gate that if a photographer doesn't shoot film, they're not really a photographer. Everyone should shoot film at least a couple times a season, full stop.

However, it's a common fallacy that film forces you to "be careful" and that the average quality of your photos will go up. This is bad thinking. You can be careful with digital. You should be somewhat carefree with film. The second you start holding back because you're afraid of the cost, you're fucking up.

Here's an exercise before you embark on this adventure: it's something I learned in college. Try and shoot photos as if you were using large format. Use a tripod. Meter carefully. Do you have a remote shutter release? Use it. If not, you can get a third party cheapo for like $10-15. Really study a scene before you move on. Is there something you haven't noticed? Walk around it, try to examine it from multiple angles and heights. Use a deep depth of field and shoot at base ISO. You'll be surprised at the kind of photos you can make if you just slow down. Ignore that initial frustration and boredom with a photo and stick to it. See what you can make.

And then go buy a film camera while you're at it.

If normal range dslr or mirrorless sensors produced pleasing images, they would be used in movie level production cameras. But theyre not. Super-35 film is. Smaller than full frame film beating the uber dr hdr machine you cherish.

Don't shoot film just because you think the limited frames will magically make you more thoughtful with your compositions. Most people end up taking boring snapshit after snapshit on film, and then either end up as one of those pretentious IGfags who convince themselves their snapshits aren't snapshits because they're on muh film, or they just drop the hobby completely after spending a bunch of money on film+dev and getting frustrated with their shit images. Imagine you've dropped off like six months worth of rolls at the lab, you already forgot what most of them are and you can't wait to rediscover all the great shots you took, only for them to come back as the most generic tourist shots of mountains, beaches, poorly framed taillights of cars, flower pots, crooked horizon cityscapes, missed focus portraits in unflattering light, pictures of benches, and lampposts without any particular interest, etc.
The truth is, that's what most people's "body of work" looks like, and a different medium won't change that. Nor will it give your images a "unique and interesting look" because everyone and their mother is spamming 2x overexposed portra and b&w film.
Honestly I think people should just start on their smartphones. I've seen countless legitimately good, well framed photos taken on iphones, samshits and xiaomis. If you can do that and you start feeling like image quality is the weakest point of your photos, then get a camera. And if you think you'd enjoy to tinkering and fucking around with chems and scanning/wet printing/contact printing, buying rare films on marketplace from boomers, etc., then get a film camera.

i feel ya, it's magical, but a digital is helpful to experiment then pick up the film when you find that special shot
