I realized this picture was somewhat hard to edit in order to make the deer pop...

I tried doing it without cropping because I really like that full image. I brought the exposure on the deer up, fucked with contrast, took out clarity from the surroundings and added a little to the deer, even introduced a little more red to the deer. I couldn't get anything working :(

did the deer "pop" even you saw it with your own eyes? why does it need to be brighter? the OP image you posted looks good. that's just how the environment and lighting was.

Your picture looks very natural. The sunlight is what's making it look not too interesting. Here's one without cropping.
Brought exposure down a couple stops, adjusted contrast, s-curved the green, and slightly saturated the deer.

sorry man, i think this one is a close miss.

The biggest problem imo is that the subject is not well separated from the background, and the background is very distracting.

It's really hard to fix this in edits because jacking up the contrast just makes the background even more distracting.

The deer's eyes are also not level with that ugly, jarring tree it's standing right in front of so correcting for one of the other makes it look off.

those two trees on the extreme edges of the frame have to go because they make the picture feel closed off in a bad way. but that stump at the bottom right is impossible to get rid of completely without cropping too close to the deer's feet.

crucially there is no reason for this to be a vertical but there is not enough compositional room to crop it as a horizontal.

It's also like three stops underexposed, has like five stops too little magenta and is oversaturated to my tastes, which can be corrected at least. Attached is my attempt
