for the first pic, i would have either added exposure, or brought the whites slider down (increasing brightness of the highlights) instead. the deep shadow to the left of the car is cool i wouldn't try to lift stuff like that at all.
for the second image its hard to say. this sort of dynamic range with the sky is always a challenge. ive used gradients and masks and shit in the past, but i tend to lean towards minimalist edits in general so more often i just crop or throw the image away.
i don't have a problem exposing for skin, which is what you should do when shooting a portrait. its not the issue that i have. the issue i have is lighting that is flat or boring or coming in from the wrong direction, etc. i know that when i take the photo its going to look like an average phone pic
