it all becomes public domain. We upload everything to the defense visual imagery distribution service (dvidshub.net) where anyone can look at it and download it. Plus, most of what i have done is unclassified.

talk to a military recruiter and DO NOT sign a contract for anything other than comcam. or COMMSTRAT (Communication strategy and operations) in the usmc (me), mass communicator in the navy, or just combat camera the army and air force.

It takes about 6 months of training after your basic training and then in job school, you'll find out if you're a videographer, photographer, or graphics specialist.

My photo chief, a sergeant, called me about three weeks after she got out of the marine corps and told me she was shooting some graduation photos and asked me how to get background blur for a portrait... There are a lot of fuck-ups who pick up rank for no good reason. She got her rank by getting pregnant every time she got close to needing to do anything.

Lot of opportunities for cool photographs, but I do not know how you can deal with the morality of being a cog in the military industrial complex propaganda machine. Glorification of a 20-year imperialistic war that only serves the extremely wealthy; while only bringing a huge and unjust tax burden, or death and suffering upon civilians is not something I could live with. I suppose the best you could do is to try to capture the horrors over the "glories". Not that they'd ever let those images see the light of day. Good luck.

I half filled out an application to be an Image specialist for the Canadian Military. It's a long shot so i haven't really followed through. Pretty sure the only open position is in the reserves in a province far away from me, but you still get paid for taking pictures so it's worth considering

I try to focus on the people. There are plenty of times I have to drink the koolaid and just shut up and color but I like to show the hardship and emotions going through each Marine. I try to show their eyes a lot and make sure they aren’t washing out any of their natural feelings because I have a camera. I talk to everyone I meet everywhere I go and make sure they see that at least some part of the Corps isn’t here to dick them over, at least one of us cares about them. Seeing me out there and seeing how cool I make them look, giving them something to send home to their parents or spouses seems to make the Marines I’ve run with pretty happy. There are a lot of photos I can’t post officially but that doesn’t mean I don’t have them. I can’t show nicotine or alcohol use but I still have the memoirs and I still have the photos. I feel like you’d like the movie Combat Obscura. Check it out when you get the chance.

Gotta remember that it’s a pretty hard road to travel just to take some cool pics. Definitely worth it but it isn’t for everyone. Just keep at it and keep badgering your recruiter until he gets you the contract you want. Don’t settle out of your dream.

this may be an absolutely braindead question, but I have to ask. Are non-digital mediums like 35mm and medium format obsolete in long term photography projects, especially in military settings? I personally feel like it could still be possible to shoot with analog cameras, though I understand that the extra hassle might not be worth it for any professional in the field.

I have yet to meet a photographer in the military who still uses film. We have a couple film cameras in a display case in my shop, including a Mamiya rz67, an I’ve been trying to convince my command to let me use it. They refuse saying that film is a waste of time given the equipment we have. I would like to see how digital medium format cameras would change how our work comes out. In the field with any analog cameras? No, digital is the only usable solution in today’s field environment. It’s possible to use but absolutely obsolete.

Whats it like? I wanted to join the airforce and do photography or videography. Is 29 too old? I really wanted to do journalism and it seems like a better alternative to jschool

the job is awesome and i have seen people join at 29 before. be wary that there is a lot of bullshit the military throws in with the job. Weigh your options carefully and talk to a recruiter. airforce is waaaay cushier and easier than the USMC so youd be better off there for journalism.
