Yes. It's still better and produces less noisy images than exposing for highlights and yoking your shadows up 5 EV.

I was thinking of just 3D printing a matte box anyway and sticking with lens mounted NDs and polarizers for now, thoughts?

Because some ultra wide angle zoom lenses cannot use screw on filters due to massive thread size and the front element bulging out beyond the thread itself.

The lenses that have this design have wide consistent apertures and ultra wide angles. Including Sonys new $3000 ultra wide. They are often sharper than or match prime lenses in sharpness at equivalent focal lengths.

It's your own ignorance. Sony mount is too small for full frame, so their wide lenses need to be curved like fuck. Nobody else has this problem.

I use the filters, but not the holders. Not really that hold to use your hand to keep it there.

Incorrect. It's flange distance that affects the size of ultra wide lenses, not the mount size. The Sony in question is the 12-24 2.8, and the difference in FOV from 14 to 12 is huge enough to warrant a massive front element while allowing in that much light.

This to a point -- you still have to buy the threaded holders for each lens size but it's cheaper to do that than a whole new set of filters.

There are some filters that you really can't duplicate in post -- 10 stop NDs for one.
