ok so ok so i got a mamiya rb67 but feel like the 90mm f3.8 max aperture is dookie. i do envoronmental portraiture... shoud i dump it for rz67 or pentax 67?? maybe switch to a 645 system?? what to buy for best optics and maximum MF look????

attached pic is not mine btw, never took pics with this cam yet.

Think of it like a 45mm 1.9 equivalent. Its a good lens. The 180mm is nicer for portraits imho, but thats just what I liked. You can geet 645 backs for it too, or 220 backs, motor backs, etc.

645 if you want lighter.

I'd take mamiya options over bentax 67, as lenses are a bit shit wide open. Fuji 690 is a good option for env portraiture with its 40mm equivalent f3.5, the gsw version is just a bit too wide and a bit too slow to really get engaging images imo.

That part of the image isn't in focus bc it was shot at f/4. Look at the girl dumbass. This is Portra 400, this image is even sharper with Ektar.

the glass on all three of the rb67 rz67 and pentax 67 systems are great. 3.8 max aperture is actually pretty typical because it’s medium format. you’ll get way more bokeh than on 35mm if that’s what you’re after. go shoot a bunch of rolls on the rb67 and come back. only reason i’m thinking about trading my rb67 out for the pentax is ergonomics.

I wish someone would do a giant comparison of normal-equivalent lenses wide open across all MF systems, plus for comparison whatever the nicest normal lens on a 35mm system is, otus or leica 50mm or whatever

I wonder at what point the loss of optical resolution outweighs negative size for available systems.

Your second one is over exposed and washed. Though you could have under exposed it some when shot, and final tweaks in the darkroom..
