You shouldn't mechanically stop and ask yourself all of them every time, but it's good to remind yourself of them until they become ingrained in your subconcious.

Oh and also in case you're wondering, the reason I posted ITT isn't because I've deluded myself into thinking I'm some photographic genius. It's because the tips are at best mostly useless but harmless and at worst counterproductive and forced. That rhythm thing is bullshit.
A better rule would be try to get an interesting subject and failing that an interesting scene. Get both if possible.

I'm an absolute newbie to photography, I've not taken a picture since 1987 with a little camera, not sure but I think it was a Kodak Extralite? It took 110 cartridges.

Not touched photography since then but I find myself with an abundance of spare time nowadays and wanting to take it up, just as a hobby, not to show off my pictures or anything I just want to take some decent pictures for my own enjoyment.

Are the hints in this thread actually any good? I'm not trying to compose professional stuff here, I don't want it displayed in a gallery.
If it's good advice I'll do my best to take it to heart but will that be trying too hard?

There's a few old ruined castles around here that i'd like to walk around and capture some images of, would these general rules still hold true in that case? I imagine most of my shots would be quite wide, since a castle is a big thing and I just wonder if the rules translate if you get what I mean.

>is there a clear subject? (note: it could also be a concept, mood etc.)
>is my subject visible and lit?
>is the background playing in my favor or against me? (hint: maybe you should move)
>DO PEOPLE CARE? DO I CARE ABOUT THIS PHOTO I AM ABOUT TO TAKE?

All the things above are certainly things that don't hurt to think about, with things like light on subject and contrast with background when it comes to being a newbie, but yours is most important of all: have fun. If you have fun, eventually someone else will have fun thanks to your work, and that's all that matters.
