50mm is the best focal length right? You can get a close photo enough without getting too close physically and it’s wide enough to be able to fit a bit of scenery around.
If you could only use one for the rest of your life, which would you go for?

It depends on what you're doing. In practice, when shooting people in uncontrolled environments, I almost never use my 50mm prime (on full frame) because it's too tight for full-body shots indoors. I strongly prefer 35mm focal length, but that's from the type of shooting that I do.

This is hypothetical, of course, because if I'm ever doing a serious shoot, I use 24-70mm which covers all three focal lengths in OP pic.

I have a 25mm MFT prime lens (50mm equiv.) and it's pretty much perfect for 70% of shots I take.
The other 30% are 10% wide angle shot, which I need a 17mm prime lens for (34 mm equiv.) and 20% are with a 60mm prime lens (120mm equiv.)

Of course, that 20% of 60mm would go down if I had a telephoto lens.

I used to have only one good lens, it was 50mm on APS-C, giving me 70mm or so. I've got used to it a lot, it became my default focal that i kinda felt before i even took my camera off the bag. Nowadays i have 35mm lens, and it slowly becomes the same thing that 70mm used to be - my "natural" focal length, my default that i can use without even thinking. Best focal length is one you'll get used to, everything else is situational.

then again, 35mm sure is more practical, holy shit. i can finally fit in a room

Most smartphones use lenses with 28mm equivalent field of view. It's the best focal length because you can take any shot with it.

What your image shows is nothing more than perspective. If you get close to a subject, it will look different. Has nothing to do with focal length.

With hugin you can stitch 3 vertical 50mm photos and easily cover 24mm (and often with better results). For landscapes almost never this will be a problem. If you want the dirt and sky in the frame then you can do it with 6 or nine photos 3x2 or 3x3. Same can be done for architecture.
For tele in most cases you can just get closer.
The only problem is when you cannot get closer or you want shoot face only portrait - then you need 80+ mm
Also indoors + full body will be problematic on 50mm but grandpas birthday can be shoot with a phone.

It's the perspective, more importantly the distance to the subject.
If you use two different lenses of different focal length at the same distance to the subject and crop them to show the same area, you end up with identical images.
(At least when we're ignoring depth of field and sharpness)
Longer focal lengths only force you to go further away, a 75 mm f/3 on FF looks the same as a 50 mm f/2 on APSC after all.

I also have an APS-C and basically use a 50mm most of the time, and sometimes I switch to a 18-35. I like the 50 more, but as you say it's probably what I'm used to. I'll probably buy a nice 24-70 down the line, since whenever I borrowed a 70-200 from a friend I just shot at 70 but liked that fl a lot, so it'd be cool to have something more universal.
