I find it pretty 4chan incel thing. We're all to awkward to find subjects for our photos. Anime girls and pepes are a fine substitute.

the "2D drawing shopped in an irl photo" thing originated from mid 2000s's 2ch/japanese otakus and got exported to 4chan with the waifu stuff
i myself made a bunch of them with other anons when i stil hung out in the anime boards in 2009, we were inspired by the japs' works we saw on danbooru/pixiv, the shops were crude though and i used a super shitty tourist canon point and shoot
so i was pleasantly surprised when i learnt tumblr/ruskies took the shop to a more elaborate level

also, this gimmick is what originally got me into photoshop/photography
