Music may be the exception but I only have experience with guitar groups. They are every it as gear obsessed as photography groups. I think part of the reason is because cameras and guitars tend to be expensive, desirable and carefully marketed products widely available and comparatively easy to get something out of. That something may not be of earth shattering brilliance but it is enough to satisfy the people who buy them.
But music can be easily ignored by simply not clicking the play button, it is much harder to unsee a boring picture. That said there are enough bad pictures around that none of them sticks in the head. A bad tune can be stuck there for days.
