Why do people spend more time thinking about gear than actually taking photos? The best photographers in history just had a camera and a lens, they didn't have a huge trove full of gear they carried around.

She's right though, most pro beginners will get anal about their cam like it's the only thing they'll use forever and like they won't need a camera for different types of shoots.
But when you really are getting paid for work, you have a few different cameras and lenses. That's when you need assistants.

Geafriends shoot full frame Sonys and act smug as fuck about it. Actually established fine art photographers shoot medium format digital or large format film. There really is a difference here. Using good tools that get the job done doesn't make you a gearfriend, being an obnoxious consumer and obsessing over specs and body/brand comparison wars does.
