Ok, we have a year 2020. Digital cameras have been there for a long time. Cameras as a whole have been there for a very fucking long time. Industry is mature, and gear have got really fucking good.
Dynamic range, iso performance, af, resolution, sharpness and many others is really similar across different models. Even if you are shooting wildlife or sports, the most demanding kinds of photography, today midrange gear won't give you unusable results. So yeah, it if you have gear produced after, idk 2016, it is not likely that it is actually limiting your photographic ability.
But, despite that we have more discussions about gear than about framing, subjects, location or photographic. We have a people who try to tell you that you cant shoot crop sensor in low light, because your result will be unusable. Or that crop sensor cant give you thin depth of field (you know, most important part of portrait is blurred background). Or that it is year 2012, and some mirrorless brand has unusable AF just like first canon eos m.
Why do we have these discussion? Because these poeples are not intrested in photography! If they were, they would not have dick measuring contest about sharpness, but talk about how they use their lenses, lights and other gear in their creative workflow.
So, tl;dr: Gear discussions are meme because:
1. All modern cameras are pretty good
2. Gearfagging doesn't result in photos, doesn't result in knowledge how to create better photos, but results only in smugness whose camera brand have bigger dick
