Honestly I'd recommend buying a new one. Or a used new one. I got two old one steps for $10 each. The first one didn't work (had to buy new film to test it). Second one mostly fucked up (had to buy new film to test it). Cost of both cameras and film $80. Cost of a used new model where I am? $70. And the film for the newer model is cheaper.

Do people think it’s super cringe to post images with the sprockets and film info along with the image or no? Same thing.
Their tryhard is "look I shot it on film", your tryhard
is "look I didn't crop".

The important thing is not whether it's cringy or not, I don't care much about the motivation behind it.
But it looks very distracting. Text, strong shapes and contrast immediately grab our attention in photos. And the area outside the frame is littered with text (edge markings), strong shapes (sprocket holes, lines, other markings) and strong contrast.
Now your photo, with whatever shapes/contrast/subject/etc. has in it occurring naturally, has to compete for attention with the area around the frame which is artificially inflated with tons of those attention grabbing elements. Especially in 35mm.

In the end it's just distracting and reduces the attention your actual photo gets.
I see no reason why someone would present their photos in such a form, other than clout chasing with #film hashtags etc. .

I'd say start with zone I, so -4. If you get too much fog, decrease preflash. Preflash increases base fog - and that is used to determine the ISO in terms of density above base+fog.
So after some point, extra preflashing will effectively *reduce* your film speed, i.e. despite getting some extra density in the shadows, it'll be fog/low contrast, so no extra detail.

Do you have a plan in mind how to preflash your film?
If you can take an extra preflashing exposure right before the actual one, then it's no issue.
But I can't think of a practical way to preflash a whole rollfilm for later use.

Preflashing is nice for contrast control on the *paper* when printing. Or with sheet film if you want to open up the shadows a bot but without pulling and affecting mids/highlights.
You can think of a Zone I preflash (-4EV) as giving +1 stop to your darkest shadows, +1/2 of a stop to your zone II, ~6% more exposure to Zone V (your middle grays), and even less higher up.
So yeah you're right, it works best with pushing, because pushed film is usually starved for shadow density/exposure.

But in any case, on rollfilm, it's too impractical for me.

By learning how exposure works on digital first. Also realizing that you can trust your camera meter 95% of the time. The other 5% of the time are exposure compensation adjustments necessary for obvious light conditions (snow, fog, backlight).

Vision 3, like 500T, apart from being tungsten balanced (a big thing for tungsten light, an 80A filter would rob you 2 stops), is inherently lower contrast in its native chemistry.
And can be found cheaply, if rolling your own from cine short ends. The only hassle is keeping stock of yet another type of chemistry.

Where do you find Vision 3 in 120 though?
Or you mean from Cinestill?
Rolling your own from cine 65mm film is a bitch, plus those almost never end up available as cheap short ends at discounted price.

I just recall that NASA kept using film based engineering cameras during the Space Shuttle Era, because no other videography method could provide the necessary dynamic range of seeing engine exhaust as clearly as the launch pad. I understand they used IMAX film, however.

yeah, I guess I agree. It seems to be popular in street and portrait which maybe is one of those styles of work that was overly inflated during the film era maybe? So a way to recapture the 'importance' of those images would be to show they were shot on a vintage format...not sure. Even the best studio shots now make me feel nothing. No, the name comes from early methods of flashing sheets, but you doqnt need a flash to do it.

You can also do it post exposure.

Suggestion for scanning and post-editing b&w film?
I develop the films by myself but don't have a scanner yet. I left my last film to a shop for scanning but I'm not really happy about the results, there is an isane quality gap compared to the photo developed in a darkroom by a local photographer. Point is, the second solution is quite expensive so I can't use it for all my photos. What do you suggest?

I do own a DLSR and I thought about shooting the negatives with a tripod and a light table, but I still miss a macro lens, all I have is some close up filters for my 50mm that yes, allow me to get closer but not enough to fill the frame.

Canon user, so unfortunately that's out of the line. Major issue is being on a budget, I also temporary stopped shooting film to focus on digital so I'd rather not invest too much money for the moment

I'm a Canon user too, it's a threaded holder and you can make it work with a Canon lens. Look here, there was a similar discussion:

For the moment I think I'll do the following: "scan" with my dlsr at low quality the negatives so I can check what photos to keep and what to discard; for good shots that I really want to keep/use for portfolio etc I'll have them developed by the photographer/artisan and then I'll eventually scan the print; Lastly, for cheap requests or just to have them I'll have them scanned in a shop.

50mm / 60mm macro lenses are quite cheap. Not sure which DSLR you have but Nikon and Canon both have options that are $200 or less.

$350 all in for a macro lens + es-2 that will make full utilization of your DSLR's resolution is a crazy value for a 35mm scan rig.

For the moment I noticed that scanning with a dlsr, even if I can fill only 1/3 of the frame, doesn't produce terrible results, even if the resolution is way lower (at least I do have control on the whole process). It could be useful for personal shots. Image related, a test shot using a smartphone as backlight (just to check resolution)

Speaking of which, any decent light pad/table but still on a budget?

That said, any good light pad/table on budget? i tried taking some test shots with a smartphone as backlight just to check resolution: since it fills only 1/3 of the frame is fine for personal use and to see how it went, but I'm unsure if it's going to be fit for printing. Image related, the test shot. Please ignore the camera settings, I forgot to change the ISO after some night shots I took yesterday lol

Plustek is the only option really.
Epson flatbeds in this price range have 1/4 the measured resolution as Plusteks. If you get roughly 16MP of detail with a plustek, you'll get roughly 4MP with the Epson.

No. The only options are Vuescan and Silverfast. Silverfast is more complete in terms of film profiles (for negative inversion) and a more user friendly UI, Vuescan is cheaper. None is actually "good" from a software perspective, they can be buggy, much more so than other regular software.
But it's all there is.

Some Plusteks bundle in a version of Silverfast (SE Plus) for free with the scanner. The software alone is 80-100€ for that version. Vuescan is a bit less.
You might find Vuescan cracked though, for Silverfast it's virtually impossible due to their backasswards retarded licensing, where the software is tied to the scanner model.

They have the same sensor/resolution/DR essentially.
The 8200 has an extra infrared channel in the sensor, so it does automatic dust removal with *colour* film. Dust removal when activated doubles the scanning time, but it's still much faster than manually dust spotting your scans.

Check prices and availability, and decide whether dust removal is worth it to you.
I have the 8100 and keep my negs clean, plus blow+wipe with a cotton glove before inserting to the scanner. I only occasionally need to manually remove dust.
Also to make it clear, auto dust removal only works for colour film.

There isn't any dedicated scanner that does medium format for less than 1,500€ or so.
Flatbeds are the only choice in that budget.

Couldn’t you just use the 100mm macro you own? You can superclamp a neg carrier from your darkroom to a Matthews C-stand. You’ll need two additional C-Stands from either your commercial studio or your dedicated portrait studio. One for a Profoto head and pro pack and one to hold some diffusion between the light and the neg. Then, simply plug in your new dslr to capture one and record a physical object for digital distribution.

as long as your rolls are in their original packaging (box and canister) they should be fine, although the bags won't hurt. I still put them in ziplocks just to be safe.

I scan 35/120 with a nikon d750 + tamron 90mm macro lens, a raleno led light panel, the essential film holder to hold the negatives, and a sturdy tripod

it's a bit of an investment but the workflow is fast and it quickly becomes worth the initial investment, especially as I tried cheaper alternatives and had really poor results

pic related is a 120 shot scanned on said digital rig

I'd say cut your loses, also you might kick yourself if you make a great picture soon and you already know it's gonna be out of focus. If you can load the rest to your slr without a problem then do it. Figure out what happened to the point and shoot, fix it or dump it. If a camera has an issue I can't trust it and I don't like to use it anymore anyway. Analog is pricey, you want to make each shot count.

I've used it for location based shoots before and it's ok, not really strong enough to be a key light but in a pinch it can do the job

pic rel was shot indoors using the led panel as a key light, bit dull for my liking

So I wanted to buy my stepson a f65 for Christmas but I got a great deal for a f80 with a 28-80mm, three rolls of gold 200 and a little bag for 50€. The camera and the lens are in absolutelx mint condition - it looks like it hasn't been used once AND it doesn't have sticky leather. I'm happy!

I've never understood the "Ektar's bad for portraits" meme. There are the more obvious cases of way too much red getting into white people's skin, but my pleb eyes can't see anything wrong with the skin tones in a portrait like this one. I'd much rather have a subject turn out looking more sun-kissed than looking like a ghost, unless they were *extremely* pale and that was what I was trying to capture in the first place. Oh hey buddy sorry I didn't see your reply. By "new model" I'm referring to the itype polaroid cameras. The "one step 2". They are functionally identical to the old polaroids except they have a built in flash, a self timer, led film counter, and an internal rechargable battery. Because the battery is in the camera and not the film the pack of itype film are like $7 bucks cheaper than the old 600 film. People are especially illiterate when it comes to the models so for my recommendation of buying a used new model, check your local classifieds for "polaroid" and then check if any of them are the one step 2. They are usually bought buy girls who shoot one pack and then can't be assed to buy more film.

With the XA2 you can pretty much keep it parked permanently on the 'far' focus setting. Only when you start shooting subjects <3m should you start using the middle or close setting. Pic related xa2 frame

I got into a box of camera gear which I guess now belongs to me since the previous owner is dead now.
Here, there's a Contax RTS with a non-operational film advance lever (idk if I just fucking suck at working it out), a functioning, but otherwise decomposing Yashica FX-3 and an unrelated Leica CL that's bizarrely made in Japan.

I know that none of these cameras are worth much anymore. The Leica is likely worth the most. There was something of a haul of lenses though, some of which I plan to adapt to a MILC camera.
Is there any real reason to keep a hold of these besides any sentimental value? And should I do anything to at least preseve these, or at least reduce the amount of dirt they have on them (I believe the previous owner didn't take good care of them).

The RTS is one of the nicest SLRs made when it comes to build/tactile quality.
Since you have it already and a nice f/1.4 planar I see, might as well try fixing it (probably easy/cheap fix) in case you ever want to dip your toes in film.
Also post the lenses. If there are any Leica lenses in there (even just 1) they're worth more than the rest of the collection combined.

I've already "dipped" my toes figuratively. Last edition, I was the Contax T2 anon. That camera was way easier to find (not in deep storage). I've already started shooting with that camera.
The RTS was in a camera case, which is currently sitting in a plastic bag due to the faux-leather disintigrating and smelling like burned tyres. The RTS also came with an auto-winder that takes 6 AA batteries. There's also space for some kind of bizarre battery in the camera itself that's way smaller than anything else I've seen.

The other lenses include a Distagon 25mm, Yashica 135mm, Tamron 300mm, a teleconverter of some kind and 3 extension tubes.
At any rate, idk where to start in trying to fix the advance lever, but needing some kind of exposure metering kind of kills my main interest. At least the CL has a built-in light meter.

There are only 2 Leitz M-mount lenses in the collection - a 40mm and a 90 mm. I am more interested in adapting them to Micro Four Thirds, personally, though idk about the CL.

Oh! I also forgot. Those cameras are all sitting on some kind of Leitz 35mm slide projector. Not a camera, but film related regardless.

All that stuff is high end, or niche, or both.

Never sell the glass. As you said you can use it on mirrorless. Though I'd suggest you get a full frame body to have actually useful focal lengths, mft is nice but all your lenses, wideangles included, become normal/long on mft.
At this point you have glass that is worth more than a fullframe camera. And glass you can keep for life. Even if you're not into film, you can get a smallish full frame mirrorless to use all those lenses on.

Also, definitely try the CL with the 40mm summicron. It's a great combination, extremely compact for interchangeable lens camera, great lens, and 40mm is a very interesting focal length, as close to normal perspective as you can get and very good for walkaround.

No, just the camera gear of my deceased father, who was a low pay grade employee at a child support office. Peak boomer though, left my mother in borderline poverty after his death.
There aren't any more Zeiss or Leitz lenses. The others are a Tamron and a Yashica.
Idk if there's anything else hidden elsewhere - I wouldn't know where it is in storage.
At any rate - I know some of this stuff is neat, but the way it was stored was pretty... yikes and the RTS seems to be non-operable, and I'm not sure what to do about it other than contemplating sending it off to some specialist in Germany since Kyocera ended service in 2015 (and all the other specialists refuse to handle Yashica/Kyocera era Contax).

It's labelled Leitz but uses the red dot logo. Even the case has a Leitz logo on it.
I didn't really open it up and look at it in depth, as I don't have any slides to use in it. It looks like some kind of Pradovit, I think.
I put it into storage again, as I don't have any plans to use it.

I would try it out if I had any slides to use with it.

I have a laser printer... it would probably melt the acetate sheets (it sometimes melts envelope glue when printing addresses).
I think it's best to have it stay in storage for now. It's far easier to get to now anyway.

Why didnt you guys tell me Tri-x handles pushing this well? Shot a roll with a gw690ii in the dead of night handheld with zero problems. Semi stand for 2 hours in rodinal yielded beautiful thick negs, and the big neg size hides the grain. I always thought id need to go digi for night time walks without tripod, this changed my game.

I already got Ektar to shoot the spring blossoms..
But I'm sure I can just get Provia or Ektachrome closer to the time.
I had an idea to get a new M-Mount lens, probably Voigtländer or something, and use it on the CL.
I suppose fresh/new glass on film would look nice, maybe too modern... But that's a project for another day.
Plus, a 625 battery is way easier to obtain than a battery for Yashica with a decomposing rubber... whatever... The mechanism in that still works as intended.

Not necessarily standard but yeah some cameras have what you’re referring to as “good economy” per roll. Others bad. I’ve noticed 90s point and shoots seem to be really good at getting an extra 1/2 frames.

Yeah, I'm using a 90s camera that's point and shoot in operation, but has rangefinder like manual focus. Also manual aperture if you want. Or you can just let the autofocus and autoexposure work (with AEL and AFL upon halfway press of the shutter button).
I suspect that the motor for auto-advance is just well calibrated. That, or I didn't pull out much film when loading.

Epson flatbeds are notorious for not being properly focuses at the point where the film lies. Scanning (both the scanner itself and whatever automated settings you're using) will make a WAY bigger difference than your camera, lens, and film choices will if digitized files are your end point.

Im using a plustek opticfilm 7300 and I'm pretty happy with it so far! Make sure to get a good program to go along with it. I'm using the age old silferfast that came with it and... It's not nice...i can provide some more sample scans if you want.

Either way you need to figure out a light source. The Nikon is just a holder for film.

My plustek cost me 90€. Which is about half the price they usually go for so I think I just got lucky. But year DSLR scanning sounds like a good enough option given you have the camera for it ready to go. I'm using an Oly pen so there's that - I also hugely enjoy the workflow when using a dedicated scanner.

I see you guys are discussing film scanners right now and I wonder if you can help me out?

I have hundreds of instant photographs, nothing special of course but family photos, holidays from years ago, events with friends and suchlike.
I would very much like to scan these photographs somehow, I've tried a flatbed scanner that I own and the glossy reflective nature of the instants makes that unsuitable. I've tried a couple of "Smartphone" scanning applications and haven't found one with acceptable quality, they stitch the various scans together correctly but the colour reproduction and any sort of contrast is absolutely non-existent.

I'm willing to spend some money to be able to scan these memories so if anyone knows of a genuine solution I would be very grateful.

You’re talking about a different scanner.
The 120 Pro was withdrawn and a new model came out, supposedly with my CC better optics. The new version is very recent, maybe a year or so since it was released to reviewers and even less since it’s commercially available.

Maybe a very thing sheet of Newton glass to put between the photos and the glass bed of the scanner? Of course it might affect focus depending on the thickness, but maybe not too bad.
The other option is wet mounting, but it gets messy.

Push your film - underexposure it by setting the ISO manually to a stop faster than what the film is rated for.
Then mark the film and the order form for your film as being pushed +1, and they'll develop your film for longer.

I don't really have much of a reason to do it myself, plus my main film camera has DX reading, so automatically goes to box speed (unless I "hack" it with bits of paper and/or aluminium foil stuck to the roll)

I’m getting shots like this on C200. I get more hits on 800 speed film. I’d say most of my neutral outdoor scenes hit, but if too much sky gets in, it misses. In particular, indoor scenes with fluorescent overhead lighting just miss entirely.

Bought a second Olympus XA2 with the A11 flash. I was thinking about using two other flashes that are triggered by the A11 flash but won't I risk overexposing everything? Seeing as the XA2 doesn't have manuel aperture I thought shooting one ISO stop lower to adjust for it. Any tips?

for what its worth, I bought the Cs6 kit cause I have a whole stack of expired velvia, and it's not nearly as nice as C41 development. Need to dilute first stage in a separate measuring container, wash steps between every stage, more toxic fumes, takes twice as long. It'll be worth it just to burn through this velvia, but I might just send slides off to the lab after that.

Lomo 800 is supposed to be really good. Your only other native option is Cinestill 800T. See https://thedarkroom.com/film-index/. Otherwise you're going to be pushing film (which isn't a bad thing).

My camera doesn't have a manual mode - it's stuck to program mode, which I guess becomes an aperture priority mode if you change the aperture setting out of its "AE" aperture. There's no way to manually set the shutter speed.
The only way to underexpose film on my camera is to mess with the DX encoding on the canister.

While I could use an alternative camera, not having light metering sucks.

It's a nice camera, but the widest frame being 40mm can be a bit limiting depending on what lenses you tend to use. If you're a 40/50/90 shooter it's a solid choice though.

Forgot to mention, I'd get a CLE over the R3A. It's a nicer camera to use imo and you get 28mm framelines plus 40 and 90...which is much more flexible.

Is the CLE worth it over the CL? I’m sick of metering externally on the M3 and I want a TTL meter. The CLE looks better designed and the meter seems better, but the CL is cheap. CL would also has 50mm frame lines so I could share with my M3.

Comp is nice and love the texures. Personally would’ve zoomed in more on the car and the cloth: would make a nice contrast between the smooth and rigid exterior of the car compared to the soft and wrinkled cloth. The sky looks weird though, like you shifted the highlights too much.

it was tough because there was a basic bitch modern looking car parked right behind it and would peak over when I got closer. The sky is like that because it was during the California wildfires so smoke everywhere

Makes sense, thanks. I just need to talk myself up to the CLE. I only have the Zeiss 50 Planar so I could just put the money towards the 35 with goggles, too. I tend to just shoot digital for wide angle as well since framing is harder and I already have the lenses. Either way, it seems like a bargain compared to the M6 TTL or a Bessa.

Is the Epson V600 supposed to look this soft? Left is DSLR scan, right is the V600 at 48-bit color depth and 3200 DPI. This is like 300% crop, but it seems like the DSLR scan just has way better detail.

Yes.
The lens on the epson is not that good, focus can be off (no way to fix, maybe with special holders if it happens to be off above the glass and not below), and film scans are supposed to go through slight/moderate sharpening.
In your case sharpening is not the main issue, it seems like a focus+lens issue (on the scanner).

V600 barely resolves 1800dpi, so your 3200dpi file is bloated already and won't look that sharp at 100%, let alone 300%.

Just to illustrate what I'm seeing. I got this scanner for next to nothing so I didn't really do much research. I just saw a lot of discussion online about how flatbed and DSLR scans were similar enough for medium format, but it looks like my DSLR scanning setup just beats it outright. Sucks, since it's a pain setting it up every time.

I use an XT-30 with an XF80, with a copy stand off eBay and a cheapo light box from B&H. I use a cable release as well so I don’t have to use the self timer. For the holder, I use the lomo frames, but they’re designed to show the sprockets, so if your film is a bit curled, it won’t really go in flat. I wouldn’t really recommend the XF80 just for scanning since it’s so expensive, but I already had it on hand. The XF60 is probably fine, or just some other random adapted macro lens.

Yeah, the workflow has been working out fine for me for the most part. It’s just I don’t have much space and my camera’s SD card slot is in the battery compartment, so I have to set it up and tear it down every time. I guess it makes sense that a 900 dollar glass is going to beat a cheapo scanner.

Fledgling Bronicafag here, I've shot my first couple rolls of Ektar 100 and I want to get them developed somewhere. My city's got a local camera shop that deals in film, but my folks mentioned just bringing the rolls to CVS or Walmart. Is there a big difference between potential places, or will I get a solid dev and scan from anywhere?

You can do the safe thing and send it to a reputable film lab, like Richard Photo Lab.

Well I bought mine after I dropped my Oly pen (epl8) and the battery compartment door came loose. So I basically want one because it protects my camera - not terribly much, I agree, but at least a bit.

I was kinda expecting this answer. I haven't dropped any of my cameras since then but I had some neat misses. But if your confident in your ability to prevent dropping your camera then I agree, a case is not for you.
