Does the A7S hold up for Photography?

I do a mix of Photo and video work usually street and night.

DXOMark says for Low light, unless I can shell out $4k for a 645z, Is the A7 III and after that the A7S Mk I.

I'd love the A7 III but Is it worth over 2x the price of the A7S? I'll be buying used, either way.
I don't really need the MP but the in-body stability would be nice. For some reason the Other A7 and A7S models are ranked worse for high ISO performance.

I also want to stick with mirrorless if you have any other advice / suggestions since I like using manual-focus vintage lenses to save more money.

A7S models are video specialist cameras, they have 12MP sensors for better low light performance. You get 4240 x 2832 pics out of it.
The regular A7 III is over twice the resolution.

Absolutely. And the A7 iii has an improved sensor that (according to DXO) gives it just as good low light performance as the A7S even with 2x the pixel density.

So I'm not sure still if it's worth saving up for the A7 III (or even to spend that extra money saved from getting an A7S on better lenses) just for 2x megapixels and IBIS.

Are there any other reasons why I should save up? I'm going to be using mostly manual focus anyway so I don't care about any eye-tracking or fast autofocus features.

The A7rIV is also similar in noise to the A7iii and A7s. You guys are only thinking of 100% crops rather than displaying the image at the same size - viewers will look at the photo at the same size whether it's on a screen or on a print regardless if it's from an A7s or A7rIV. The noise will look the same since it's physically smaller on A7rIV

Well it will depend on whether you print or not. I'd take the A7III over the other just for the extra MP but I've been spoiled by Nikon so 12MP seems too low to me

Nothing, it's a different generation so it gets a pass. Also Nikon was kinda lagging behind back then, Canon was playing in the 20MP range already back then. 16 is my minimum.

I'm confident that nobody with a7s strips his exif here, either. 12mp ff has this weird look to it. It looks low res and ff at same time. Check shugars df photos. Very similar, if not the same, sensor tech. He could also be nophoto, certain that he's not posting here.

pictuers on ig, biggest photographic platform right now are like 1080p, so 2mpix. So yeah, it will be good enough. You will have less room for crop though, so keep that in mind.

Early gen sony a7 have some problems with focus peaking, when it shows everything is in focus. IDK if a7s also has that problem you have to check it out for yourself.

About other option, don't discount crop. Corner image quality is universal issue of all vintage glass. Almost every lens will be noticeably softer in corners wide open, but vintage wide angle wide open is probably most unholy combination of all. So when using crop you arent exactly loosing much.

I used to shoot 5d classic, and it was terrible for vintage glass, because no live view and flawed light metering when using glass without contact pins. Then I moved to fuji xt20. I can't say I miss full frame all that much. Xt1, xt2... etc line has some cool stuff for manual focus lenses. Pic related. Big window is full field of view, and small window is 5x magnification. I think this is amazing, especially when peaking doesnt work like with macrophotography.

And honestly, don't discount canon EOS. Some of most interetsing vintage glass is M42. Yeah canon FD is nice, minolta md is nice, konca hexar is nice, olympus OM is nice, but when you quickly realize after investing in 6 different systems, adapters cost quickly add up, lol. Especially if you want to go for some of cooler adapters like adapter with drop in ND filter, close focus with helicod or tilt shift. If I'd have to invest in only one vintage system, it would be M42, because it has more than jupiters and helios. Takumars and carl zeiss jena are really cool glass.

Just don't get 5d classic. You really want something with live view, since it makes focusing much easier, and tilt screen because focusing on screen permanently fixed to your back is hardly comfortable.

Also, there are ways to adapt m42 to nikon f. However, they usually involve lathe, lol.

Nikon adapters without using a lathe exist, but if you want infinity focus then you need an optical element that degrades the image (pic related).
If you're into DSLRs and meme glass, Canon and Pentax are the best.
Also the importance of the articulated screen cannot be understated. I lost it going from crop to FF, it was great.
When people ask for camera recs under 500 bucks my go-to options are 60D, 70D, K-S2 and K-70. Pentax is best if video isn't a concern because of SR and that magic teleconverter that adds AF to manual lenses.

And few things more, because I shoot on dslr and moved to mirrorless: some glass will handle pretty badly on mirrorless, due to extra lenght of adapter. Basically 135 will be awkward to use and 200+ will be really fucking awkward. Plus vintage glass usually is rather metallic, so telephoto will be really front heavy,

On dslr adapters are shoorter, bodies heavier and grip deeper, so it is much less of an issue.
For me personally, since I shoot crop 50mm is telephoto enough for me, so it's less of an issue.

However, dslrs miss on things like helicod adapter, drop in nd filters, tilt shift adapter and speedboosters. Speedboosters and nd are popular among video crowd, not so much photographic, so how much of an issue it is depends on you.

Absolutely based recommendation. If you want to shoot vintage telephoto pentax is definitely best.

Also another point about vintage glass:

Don't blindly follow speed. Speed is really not the most important aspect of the lens. Sometimes slower lens can give you better result, so watch out for your reserach.

This is especially important if you are going bokeh whore. Some 50 f1.4 have absolutely hideous bokeh. Pic related is zeiss pancolar 50 1.8, which is famous for having smooth boker, saturated color, and radioactive glass.

I've talked to Eggy on his thread and I keep marveling at some of the things they offer, it's really a brand where the designs are made with adaptation in mind. You get stuff like the option to enter the focal length so that the shake reduction is fine tuned and so is the shutter speed range. Pretty awesome brand. Also pic related, the teleconverter I was talking about. You can put an M42 adapter on it and get AF in M42 lenses, it's incredible.

How radioactive are radioactive lenses? Is it a health concern? I guess one should be careful about handling them inside, you don't want to breathe alpha or beta particles. I hope gamma emission isn't common.
Have you ever had them shipped internationally? It wouldn't surprise me if they made the scanners get a bit crazy.

Don't you pretty much get the same level of noise if you shoot a higher res camera at the same ISO then resize the image to 12 MP or so? That's what I've heard and it makes sense. Also explains why these cameras are more popular for video since they deal with different constraints like binning and line skipping which necessitates certain resolutions to be optimal.
