With the amount of photo manipulation tools avalible to us as photographers now theres no reason why a person can't intentionally make what they would envision.
I would say one of my favorite photographers ventures into the realm of abstract since you can't tell on some of the images hes made in the past on what elements are real or if it is a prop. Along with how wild his set ups can be. You can say "abstracts" are whatever you google for "what is abstract photography" but there has to be mystery and intrigue behind the "what the fuck am I looking at"
Keep in mind theres nothing wrong for something that looks cool so I took a photo of it. I just think the statement of "it isn't abstract if the viewer can tell what's in the photo" isn't a solid way of determing an abstract.
