honestly the 50mm 1.8D second hand for $50 is the best choice to start out with, perfectly sharp, versatile focal length, probably the most "pancake" AF lens you can get, anything else is just gravy but wait until you're dedicated and drop more than the camera is worth on a modern lens

I have both a D700 and an X-T2, and apart from the higher resolution and lighter weight the X-T2 has no advantages. D700 ergonomics are far superior and it's just a more enjoyable camera to shoot with. Even the much-vaunted Fuji colours aren't as pleasing as the colours from the D700, at least to my eyes. Fujis are a little overrated, frankly.

This. I've got a D3s and an XT1. The Fuji is great when I want to travel small and light and I really enjoy the controls. But the D3 is so much more responsive and quality glass is much cheaper. The Fuji jpegs are nice but the raws are a horror show. Noisy, soft, occasionally weird contrast, and substantial distortion because they really on software correction crutches so much in their lens designs. It can be difficult to get them looking better than the in-camera processing. Their special snowflake Capture One version barely supports the XT1, much less my original X100 or X20. Conversely the Nikon raws are perfectly pleasant to deal with. They're predictable, act as expected and have considerably more latitude and flexibility. I'm far from a PP ninja but man do I hate editing those Fuji raws.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The 35mm f/2 is an absolute shit-show in that regard. You'd think they'd be able to build a moderate speed standard prime that didn't distort like hell and whose corners would actually sharpen up fully by f5.6, but no.

In my experience, the D lenses are faster to focus but the AF-S lenses are noticeably more accurate. I'd always take the latter over the former.

I have one. AF accuracy isn’t ideal, but it’s quite useable so long as you’re shooting in halfway decent light and provided you use one of the cross-sensor AF points. Corner and edge sharpness is pretty weak until about f/8. However, centre sharpness is good and the bokeh is great. Treat it as a specialised portrait lens and don’t expect much out of it for other applications and you’ll be happy with it.

I have both the 50 1.4 AF-D and the AF-S: the afd is WAY faster on my D8*0 bodies but the optical formula of the afs is way better (actually usable at 1.4, no spherical aberrations). As for ficus precision just switch to CD AF for critical focus wide open.

That said I also have the 55 1.2 and a bunch of other 50mm and the 55 1.2 is probably the best one at f/2. Still, the 50 1.4 afs is the one I use the most.

Sharper, better contrast, livelier color. The 1.8 isn't so bad from f4 but mine (circa 08 or 09) has never been that impressive. Flat colors, low contrast, and the build quality is terrible. It creaks and flexes when handled. After just a couple years the mechanical aperture ring gummed up and the housing feels like dollar store plastic.

I picked up the f2 for dirt cheap based on Bjorn Rorslett's glowing review. I definitely think it's a bit of a sleeper in the AI world.
