You could use a diffraction grating to help with focus. Also, despite it being a night scene, dial in your exposure for a sunny day. After all, you're still trying to capture bright sunlit planets, even if they occupy only a small part of the frame.

I was shocked I was able to see the moons this clearly. I wasn't even trying to see moons, I just wanted two blurry dots. I was stuck in really light polluted area with a pretty mediocre lens, but sure enough, they showed themselves.

I wasn't trying to do proper astrophotography, I don't have the gear or experience or the location for that. I just wanted a pic that captured how cool this event looked in real life to the naked eye.

What settings do I use to take a picture of them? I tried using iso 6400 but it came out ugly

Different cameras have different light sensitivity. Try a lot of different combinations of ISOs and exposures. Get a tripod and either trigger the shutter with a remote or set it using the built in timer function so your finger doesnt shake the camera while the shutter's open.

Manual focus, get it as close to infinity as you can. And just take a ton of photos with different ISOs and shutter speeds. 6400 is gonna be pretty grainy. Try lowering it to 3200 and leaving the shutter open for 2 or 3 seconds. Leave it open too long though and you start to get trails.

To avoid light trails, do 1/4 second, F12. I assume zoom lens. If you have an old as-c camera, you can get extra zoom. Event is still going on, and I will shoot some more tomorow. Really neat to see. Oh, I also saw a satelite fly over head! PRobably a elon musk one.

you need a telephoto lens, they're pretty damn small and far away in the night sky

it's like trying to take a picture of the moon with a phone camera, it just won't work

Yeah, this >>3783875 is a 300mm and that's as zoomed in as I can get them. The higher the number gets, the more diminished the returns get though, and those longer lenses get expensive fast.

A lot of planet photographers use 800mm lenses and up, and sometimes even with 2x extenders.

Just give it a go mate.
Let me know how it turns out - I have the poor cousin, the Lumix TZ110 that I'd probably use.
I have other cameras, but that has the longest zoom out of all of them.
Maybe I'll try a high res shot on my S1R and see what happens.
IF it stops fucking raining here.
And...
Is this visible from the Southern hemisphere?

Damn, sorry to hear mate. Some point and shoots actually work alright for stuff like this but I think the RX100 has pretty minimal zoom right? Probably best suited for wide shots so try again tomorrow if you want (with the planets a little further apart) and compose an interesting wide shot where the feature is the two planets in the distance.

My pic here >>3783873 isn't great or anything but it's a good way to still capture the event without a telephoto lens.

Yeah after reading up some articles I think my best bet would be zoomed out. Unfortunately tonight it’s cloudy again. It’s my fault for not learning how to take photos the couple of nights before the event.

Which comet? Yeah I’ll probably try to take some regular night photos this week because I feel like tomorrow Jupiter/Saturn won’t be visible. I’ll be better prepared to look at Mercury in January.
