Please explain why Andreas Gursky is able to sell his photographs at a ridiculous price? What's going on here?
His photographs are good, no doubt about it. But are they several million dollars good?
What makes him so sought after? Why does he get away with charging what he does?

They're unique. One-off prints. Buyer gets the only copy. There is still a possibility that they will loose value with time, but that's what investors are willing to risk. For example of the opposite, Ansel Adams Gallery has completely devalued his work by offering replicas and reprints of old negatives. He initiated the process himself, but he at least gave a different touch on the each of his copies by processing them by hand.

He opened the doors by utilising the best education facilities and staff, and put in a lot of hard work, and then on top of that his work has been hugely admired by the public. And if you get enough of the public interested you're more likely to get 2 very wealthy people fighting for it in the auction room.

The other thing to bear in mind is that to the investors, the higher the price they pay, the more it boosts the prices of any other works they have done and increases its chances of retaining and gaining value in the future. If Rhein ii was sold again today there's every chance it would sell for at least twice as much.

Gursky along with whole Düsseldorf School of Photography changed photography. Gursky accepted that photography is really poor at conveying the highly subjective emotions. Instead what photography since it's invention is good at "documenting" things. So he used the techniques which the landscape calendar photographers use. What new thing that Gursky did was not to document the so called untouched beauty of nature but instead he documented collective anthropocentric processes centred around the spectacle of late globalist capitalistic production seasoned in post-modern irony.
His work is about "the bigger picture." And in many ways Gursky is still a traditional landscape photographer. But he is giving the viewer much, much more conceptual content to think about.

Yes. He often questions the limits of photography and isn't afraid to use "less serious" photo techniques i.e. digital manipulation. Photo manipulation has been going on since the invention of photography and digital manipulation is just the extension of it. Nothing new or "inauthentic" in fact photography itself is the manipulation of reality.
With Rhein II he was also pointing towards anthropocentrism, the desire of man to interfere with nature and doing whatever the fuck he. Ironically Gursky inverted this process and removed the human presence from a "natural" setting.
This photograph is compositionally and conceptually a masterpiece.

Intention of the photographer does matter but the photograph have to stands on it's own first. In this case his primary intention of manipulation is clear. And if someone wants to put their subjective meaning on top it then who can stop him? If others can't honestly see that meaning in the photograph then nobody is stopping them to discard the interpretation.

Nobody really cares about the definition of art because it's a totally meaningless endeavour to lose ourselves in language games. If it is art then okay. If it isn't art then who cares?

Lastly camera doesn't do most of the work. That's a ridiculous statement, it's like saying paint brush do most of the work. You can make an argument that anyone can capture a great photograph but I would ask you that can that person capture another great photograph? Camera itself is a hollow box, a meaningless machine unless the photographer picks it up and point towards something. If photography was that easy then whole instagram must have been full of Robert Franks, Sugimotos, Gurskys etc. but it isn't because just capturing a fragment in four frame isn't enough.

The academy has long stopped caring about art, and it's not about what's relevant but what they want to become relevant. Only blind sheep can't see that it's a propaganda machine disguised as something else. It's well known many Oscar voters don't even watch the movies they vote for. It's anathema to art and it's a sham. And it's only going for get worse with the new rules. It's like the modern version of socialist realism except the enforcement is arguably softer. It will no longer matter if a film is good or not but how many token checkboxes it gets ticked. Back in the day earning an Oscar was all a guarantee that a movie would become a timeless classic. Nowadays it's almost a guarantee it's unwatchable slop that will age like milk. Get Out got the same award as Citizen Kane, The Apartment and Rain Man. It simply doesn't cut it. Anyone who seriously cares about film has long stopped giving much thought to the Academy's ridiculous decisions. The Palme d'Or and the Golden Lion are a lot more reliable indicators of quality than the Oscars. When they match the Academy's choice it generally indicates the Academy did a honest pick for once.

At one period in the Soviet Union art was stifled by the state that forced painters to produce art that stayed within prescribed themes, it completely took artistic freedom away. It wasn't just censorship of what to not paint, you were ordered what to paint. Painters became unwilling commissions artists. In fact, as a response the CIA pushed modern art. MoMA started as a CIA psyop to prove that in the west artists could do what they wanted. They also propped Jackson Pollock up. The same MoMA that later housed works by Gursky, ironically enough. That was decades after it stopped being a psyop though.
I'm not even anti-Gursky, I'm just saying that Rhein II is inflated. Gursky has some really cool photos like the one with the apartment complex. He knew what to use to produce it and he had the eye to see there was a great photo waiting to be taken there. But Rhein II is just lame.
