What is it doing? UV filters are irrelevant for digital cameras. People used them because UV light caused haze on film, but we're not shooting film anymore.

I use a CPL on all my lenses
1. because I usually shoot around water
2. protects my expensive lens. Would use one of OPs if wasn't using CPL.

Placebo for what?
It will protect your lens somewhat in the case that you drop the camera from a very short height directly onto the tip of the lens, and you don't have your lens hood on.
I don't expect to drop my camera in such a specific way, and I don't enjoy effectively shooting all my photos through a plain glass window, so I don't use them.

The only time I use these, is when my lenses are in my bag, if I'm shooting, they're always off.

Only useful in adding another element to your finely made and designed lens, ruining it.
Virtually all photographic lens elements are made by Schott, Corning, Fujitok, Sumita, Codixx, ACG or Heraeus. Canon and Nikon used to proudly advertise using superior glass suppliers in the brochures and printed materials of their lenses.
I've never seen a single filter advertise their glass supplier, not even Canon/Nikon/Fuji/Pentax/etc.
Just use a lens hood as god intended.

They're useful if you have a camera with no filter stack and also to do things like smearing vaseline on them or simply to protect your lens from scratches, splashes and debris.

I use a UV filters as prophylactics. My front elements must never be touched by human hands or wet dog noses. Dog noses were designed to get all up inside the hoods. Boop.

Being easier to clean is the biggest deal with protective filters.
I dug out a bunch of vintage lenses from circa 1972, and they all had protective filters, which meant that cleaning them was perfectly easy.

I own two filters but I don't use them because I did some test shots which showed that image quality is slightly worse when you use a filter. My lenses will be outdated in five to ten years. Therefore I don't worry if one gets damaged. I actually have a 50mm lens that got a scratch on the front lens element but it doesn't show on photos. If you intend to resell your lenses at some point then it might be a good idea to use a protective filter. But I never sold any of my gear.

Ebin. Never felt the need for anything more than my '77 Noctilux 50mm, '86 Summilux 75mm and my '68 Summilux 35mm. I actually sold my '88 Summicron 35mm after I got the Summilux. If you get good glass very rarely it makes sense to buy newer unless you let it get fungus. Canon plebs get worse glass on EF than they did with FD decades before, it's hilarious.

This is the correct answer. I used to use UV filters, but extra glass always decreases sharpness no matter how expensive. The only reason you need protective or uv filter is to protect your lens, what a lens hood does.

Better in what way? My lenses already outresolve both film and sensors. There's not much to be gained. Some have slightly wider apertures but it's really not a big deal to me, specially if it means it's a crop lens. Leica is the brand for people who aren't specsheeting consoomers. When I see a non-Leica owner with one of those huge and hefty 50mm f/1.2 and 50mm f/1.8 lenses it makes me cringe. The announced f/0.95 from Nikon is a joke too, at that size it should be a 75mm. And don't get me started on Fuji crap.

Leica has always been about portability. But in recent mirrorless developments for example the new Nikon 50mm 1.8 for z mount has been a lot better than all their previous 50mms. And it's a cheap lens as well. A lot cheaper than any Leica lens. And probably sharper than most of their 50mms.

I use a decent UV filter. I tried cheap protectors before and they visibly worsened the image quality and fucked with the colors. Having said that you are retarded if you don't use one imo. The amount of times these things have saved my front element makes them worth it. If repairing or replacing your front element was a sub $50 task then sure but otherwise why risk it unless the lens is complete garbage and you don't care if it dies.
