you can resell most film cameras at zero loss to be honest, it's not like they can be made obsolete by something else new. maybe the only exceptions are contemporary film bodies like the f6, which most likely will go down in price.

Instant 35mm film would kinda ruin the fun for me. I love waiting a week in anticipation for my film to come back from the lab. It's fun.

it probably is. you could say the same about the camera/lens market. as soon as phones actually become valid substitutes for professional full frame setups the prices of said cameras will collapse. medium format is the one that's gonna hold the most value, both in analog and digital.

any tips on how to expose Foma 400 and ilford hp5? never shot them before, apparently foma likes being underexposed by 2 stops in the darkest areas of the pictures, which sound a bit weaird.

Depends on the situation. I took my A1 and my T2 with me for Christmas at my family's and finished 3 rolls. But yeah - it usually takes a long while... So you're probably right.

Why would they be? It's calculated that profits are larger if you make a slower but more fuel efficient plane. The goal in plane manufacturing is not speed, but fuel efficiency and maximum profitability.
The goal in phone camera manufacturing is only image quality. Manufacturing still needs to be profitable, but with miniaturalization that is not a major concern. Top flight models compete for sales with each other, and image quality is an important deciding factor.
I'm sure that phones will overtake current generation of cameras in the future. It's all about technology and money. Phones have considerably larger profit margins, so they can afford larger budgets, and priority treatment with sensor foundries.

Do C41 kits have an expiration date in months, other than rolls used?

Was gifted half a dozen rolls of 120 film for christmas. All my equipment is 135

Ordered a GW690 to shoot 'em.

In the days before it arrives I'm beginning to regret my decision. As much as I would like a negative that damned big, I'm beginning to wonder if a Kiev 60 or Pentacon 6 wouldn't have been the better thing.

I got a GSW690III thinking the same thing. The large size put me off at first too, and I kept flip flopping on it. But I think at this point I wouldn't be willing to sell it. It's enjoyable to use and it doesn't really stick out carrying on the street despite its size. The amount of detail you get with 6x9 negatives is insane. When the price of 6x9s starts putting you off, it's really easy to convert to take 135 for panos.

I did end up buying a Mamiya 6 for something more portable, but the GSW690 is more enjoyable to use to be honest. I think it's worth buying just to try it out for a while. If you find yourself not using it, you can always sell it.

50mm wider than my F-1. Same height. F-1 has a power-winder and some funky shit on it so it weighs north of 2 kilos with full batteries.

If you can find the 35-105 F3.5 in good condition it's worth it. Most by now are utterly shot. Canon made the bushings out of cheese and when they break, all the elements of the lens start to move independently of each other.

When that happens lens wont focus properly and wont hold focus as its zooms.

Otherwise, it's a dead-sharp constant aperture zoom with a not-shit aperture of F3.5. And it doesn't come with the L-tax.

Downsides are - most are fucked, it's heavy and the macro-mode is a gimmick.

Really, part of the reason those high speed films aren't available anymore is because new films are ridiculously good. You can push Portra 400 to 1600 and it'll look better than what Natura 1600 looked like. E6 film is a shame though. Fuji bringing back Provia 400X would be amazing as that too pushed to 1600 and looked better than the older Provia 1600.

The main issue I see people have when jumping to MF is they don't let the format dictate their choices. It's weird you got a 6x9 camera and are now wondering if you should have bought a 6x6 camera. Shoulda let format drive your choices, not 'medium format' in general. Either way, it's probably just buyer's remorse. You'll probably love the camera.

I own a Pentacon 6. If you are worried about portability the Fuji is probably way better in that regard. The Pentacon is pretty heavy and bulky and don't even think about shooting slow shutter speeds with it handheld. I personally do like to shoot with it, there are just some caveats to keep in mind and if you are willing to deal with them.

Depends on what you want really. Mamiya 7 is the $3000 answer everyone inevitably ends up at. If you're poor like me you buy the Mamiya 6 instead and appreciate how the lens mount can retract to make it even smaller. Makina 67 is also a popular one with retracting bellows.

There are the older folders like the Zeiss Ikonta and Mamiya Six. They're cheap cause they're older, but they can still take great shots if you can make the workflow work. And then there's the Fuji GS645 and the GA645. GS is scale focus only, while the GA operates like a point and shoot and is pricey.

I won't mention TLRs because I'm not interested in them and don't know much about them. They do seem to have nice ergonomics for handholding while still getting the waist level finder.

I wanted that big bloody negative because it and the aspect ration will suit what I do and flash syncs at any speed.

Only bugbear is that it's not interchangeable so I'm stuck with the lens I got - if it arrives bollocksed. That and customs.

Big SLR format also would be familiar.

Mamiya 7 would be nice. 3k isn't. GW690 at least looks portable and was much cheaper.

Yeah, like I said earlier, I would just give the GW690 a shot. It's comfortable to shoot on. My experience with the Mamiya 6 wasn't really that much better than with the GSW690. If anything, the GSW had a much better focus patch.

I did seriously consider the GA645zi for a bit before settling on the Mamiya 6. P&S style shooting with medium format would be fun for trips. It's still like $900 though.

well, It was a fun experience and I'm actually happy with how the pictures turned out. I'll definetly try out more Lomography. The one I used is trying to recreate the Aerochrome look. Aerochrome rolls are expensive as hell by now, one goes for 100 bucks.

the age old question arises of what makes a photo interesting and unique? Ofc just by using a special medium, it doesn't automatically make every scene special, but at least it is something else?

Alex Burke, to take a recent example of someone from here who shoots film, takes Superb landscape photos by using age old technique's. It seems to work for him. It produces good quality pictures, but wouldn't it turn stale pretty fast if everyone would do the same?

One doesn't have to defend every new trend out there, but I'm confident to say that there are more than enough photos of the bavarian forest, which are far superior in quality to the ones I have taken. Still, these photos are now mine and I'm also sure that there are either none or very few photos of this place, taken in that way.
The more I think about it, the more I want to try out more gimmicky films. Making them work seems like a fun challange

I really just enjoy the process. The picture at the end is just an artifact of going out and enjoying taking the picture.

I do think that even if a lot of my photos are basic or snapshotty, as a whole they reflect my taste and my growth in photography, and I think there’s value in that. Like, if someone went on google earth and made a cool collage of locations, I would consider that art too.

I try not to get irony poisoned out of just trying to have fun with it but I’m at the point where I’m getting tired of seeing some of the cliche shots now.

IMO, it starts with the photographer being interested in producing the work for themselves. As soon as one starts trying to cater to trends and what the masses MIGHT enjoy, at the very core the resulting work loses interestingness.

This is why so much street shit sucks, so much landscape shit sucks, so much newtopofilmfagwankshit sucks. Most of it is being driven by a look and not by the photographer actually having an interest in what they're shooting, beyond the fact that it's a trendy subject matter.

Even Alex, in his current thread, says his most instagram-tier shots are his worst sellers at art shows.

You can claim normies are stupid and whatever...but people have an innate ability to sense something being genuine. An (*well executed) image taken because there was a genuine interest in it being taken, for the sake of it being taken, will have a much higher chance of being interesting and standing the test of time.

So take images that excite you, that you find interesting. At the very least they'll make you happy, and perhaps your desire to make them interesting for yourself will make them interesting for others.

what's up /p/. i got a rolleyflex T for Christmas and i've been shooting with it these days, it's all gone smooth except for one thing: sometimes the shutter sounds really really quiet. it does make a sound, but it's really faint. i think most of the times this has happened i was shooting at 1/500th but i may be wrong. anyone know if this is normal? i still haven't got any of my rolls back from the lab so i don't know if it's faulty or not.

it's just a meme film. You shoot funny or weird looking pictures then go back to normal film because lomo film is usually inconsistent in quality. lomo purple is almost like aerochrome with severe downs syndrome if you shoot it just right, but not really worth shooting more than once

The true photographic experience is to never load the camera at all and just pretend to take shots. It's all in the experience
calculate out how many rolls you'll need to shoot to make c-41 kits worthwhile versus development labs. If you're shooting one or two rolls a month, it may be simpler and about the same price to just have your local lab or a mail-in place develop and scan them, especially as they may have a better scanning system

Load a roll of film into your camera. Set up a tripod.
Find a place that lets you use your fastest shutter speed, prefereably with the widest aperture your lens is capable off
Work back from there, closing the lens and decreasing the shutter speed.
When developing, tell the lab not to correct for exposure.

In theory, every image should be the exact same.

In truth, you'll probably learn that your camera will be off at higher shutter speeds, or lower speeds

The main negative for most of them (very few exceptions) is the small and dim viewfinders with no framelines.
You might be taken back by it if it’s your first experience with such a camera, coming from an slr or any more modern camera (even simple point and shoots).

There are some interesting exceptions though.
For instance the Konica AIII has one of the best viewfinders of *any* RF (including Leicas) and it’s a huge leap compared to any fixed lens rf viewfinder.

Burning a cheap roll of film is the easiest and cheapest for the average shooter - and will reveal other issues like shutter bounce, dragging or light-leaks.

I always consciously shoot a black frame or two with the lens-cap on to detect pinholes in the shutter, or camera body light-leaks.

There are shutter tester gadgets with a small optical sensor that record for how long the shutter stays open. They’re quite cheap too.
The cheapest and most ghetto way is to record the shutter sound with your phone, and then put the waveform in a sound editing software, and measure the duration from the shutter opening sound to shutter closing sound. It’s not super accurate but it will catch bigger errors I.e. more than 1-2 stops off. There might be an app that does it automatically.

For more accurate results, I remember there was an app that came free with buying a small gadget (with an optical sensor) that connects to the headphone Jack of your phone and measures shutter speeds. Google “Shutter tester” or so.

The only thing such a device won’t catch is shutter consistency, for focal plane shutters.
Focal plane shutters, at higher speeds, don’t open and close completely, but they leave a small slit open that travels horizontally across your frame, and the speed and width of the slit depends on shutter speed selected. The faster the speed, the narrower the slot and the faster it travels. Sometimes the slit might not travel consistently across the frame, for instance it may travel faster at first and slower at the end or vice versa. In this case a part of your frame (a vertical strip) might be overexposed or underexposed. To catch such errors, you need a more fancy device with multiple optical sensors measuring different parts of the frame.

Its more cost effective to develop 5 rolls of film at home and then throw the chems away afterwards, but i dont want to waste all that potential.
A full year is enough, are there any chems that can handle that?

What you can do is get a spray can with a heavy inert gas (Tetenal Protectant or similar), that sits on top of the chemicals in the bottle, since it’s heavier than air.
Then this makes the chemicals behave as if they’re in airtight unopened containers and extends shelf life.

Also failure is not sudden, but gradual. So you can always tell the rough condition of your chemicals after developing a film.
And you won’t have completely ruined films because the chems died overnight.

What could be causing those speckles to appear on scans? Happens mostly on the 5th-6th frame on the film holder on my Epson V300. I've looked at the bed of the scanner and it doesn't seem to have such speckles.
I have confirmed that the speckles are not on the film.

Just a quick scan to demonstrate, but it shows speckles pretty well.

I used glasses cloth on the area where that specific frame goes and it did not help one bit. The frame shifted slightly since I had to remove the film holder to clean it, but the speckles remained glued in place. Could it be dust on the inside? I looked closely and couldn't see any dust there anyways.

you can't see them, consider the size of your film anon, those would be minuscule.

tl;dr clone them out, maybe save a mask layer for next times

Not really.
They change colour even from the first film you develop. Some of the sensitisation and antihalation dyes of colour film washes out in the developer, which changes its colour.
Not to mention different films will impact the colour of the chemicals differently.
In short the chemistry colour is a really unreliable indicator of the “life” of the chemicals.

What happens is, when they’re nearing exhaustion, you’ll start getting thinner negatives and some colour crossover in highlights and shadows.
You can consider them “dead” when the result they give you is unacceptable to you.

Just arrived alright. Dropped, Hidden and Lost got it here in 3 days from Japan. Customs took their pound of flesh.

Put some new foam seals in it and it rocks along.

Have to get the top plate off to clear out some dust and the foam seals were mank. This thing worked for a living and it shows.

Big comfy thing to hold.

Is Negative Lab Pro worth it?

I've been scanning a lot of negatives with my DSLR and I want the scans to improve. But at $99 it's a bit steep but anyone have any experience with it?

Nice anon, Ive had one for a while and its become my go-to for trips. Its very handy, you can just pick it up and start shooting.

I recommend attaching a sling on the points on the same side instead of traditionally on both sides, makes it very easy to carry around your shoulder.

It's been worth it for me. It does a good job at pulling the detail out and applying some basic curves. If anything, it makes the color inversion workflow much easier. If you're not sure on the price, there are cracks available online, but I'd try and pay for it if you can since it's a one man operation.

My workflow with it looks like:
* go through every scan and white balance to the film border and crop (as required by NLP)
* analyze with NLP
* apply curves/LUTs, do basic level adjustment
* export picks as TIFF
* fine adjustment of levels and sharpening on the TIFFs in Lightroom

Teleconverters are they just a waste of money?
I own Nikon D850+Tamron 70-200 f2.8 g2 and I want to start to photograph large mammals. I do not want to spent much money, so I am hesitant on getting the 150-600mm or 200-500mm lens. Instead I thought of getting the Tamron's 2xteleconverter, which would transfer my lens into 150-400mm f5.6 lens.
What do I lose with teleconverter, lil bit of light, a bit worse image quality, bit worse auto focus? Do I get better results with teleconverters compared to cropping images? How much better the two lenses I mentioned are compared to lens with teleconverter, should I just fork over the money for the supertelephoto zoom lens?

Nah I actually recently dropped 280€ for a Viltrox prime for my Fuji before deciding it was time to accept I'd always lust after film leicas and it was time to bite the bullet.

2x converters are a bit iffy cus you lose so much light, 1.5x ones are better in that regard.
If you shoot in daylight its fine however.
You dont lose any resolution really, maybe a minuscule amount but its pretty neglible but its a huge improvement over cropping.

An actual lens will always be better. Teleconverters are a compromise. They're a cost-effective alternative when the alternative is in the megabucks regime.

The upshot of a teleconverter is flexibility. You also don'[t loose your closest focus.

The downside is 1-2 stops of light lost which can make focus tricky on some cameras.

Also, it will magnify any abherrations or imperfections in the lens.

They wouldn't have a market if they didn't work well enough to satisfy.

because the expired films are probably not made anymore which makes them rare which means people are willing to pay more for them.

If its the same brand and film type, chances are that the emulsion is different from the modern one which again makes it rare and desirable.

Uneducated opinion: the image sucks you in with a colourful point of interest right in the center, all the lines lead to the center and there's nothing to grab your attention at the edges.
It's visually interesting but there's no main subject to focus on. If you placed a person standing by or sitting on the railing and altered the angle (because right now it's eyelevel and canted which is very boring) you'd have an interesting shot.

I get most of my stuff from a german website, which performs fairly good for many years by now. Since you need an account + every uploader is more or less known by the community, you won't get any bad files. If so, people will comment underneath and the administration will delete your post and lock your account.

Anyway it works for me and so it did for many many years. I never had any issues whatsoever, plus I'm luckily not retarded enough to torrent, or god forbid, to search for "X cracked" on google.

I have a GA645 and when I have the film wound up and exposed, when it comes out of the camera it's not tight against the roll and a good portion of it comes out sticking outside of the edges of the caps on the roll, what am I doing wrong?

It's something that happens over time if I plow through a roll quick on a photo shoot it doesn't happen.

Is it really that bright outside? If you got no nd, just stop down and use a higher shutter speed. Overexposure by 1-2 doesn't hurt either.

Possibly. Most p&s use plastic gears. If a tooth on one breaks they're no longer engaged with eachother and things will sound like it's spinning but in reality nothing is happening. This is assuming your loading the film correctly.

So the 1 is just flashing? Usually when p&s don't load the screen will show E or 0...not 1.

At slow speeds, an SLR shutter works by:
1. Opening the first curtain
2. Waiting the appropriate amount of time
3. Closing the second curtain

There's a limit to how fast the shutter curtains can move, though, so for faster speeds, what they do is start closing the second shutter before the first is actually all the way open. In that way, instead of exposing the whole piece of film at once, a small slit moves over the surface of the focal plane and effectively gives you a shorter exposure.

However, that being said, when your flash pops, it only pops for a tiiiiny fraction of a second, often shorter than your fastest shutter speed. So if you're using a shutter speed that's so fast that it doesn't open all the way, the flash is only going to catch part of that exposure.

The maximum shutter speed you can use where the shutter curtains open all the way is known as the flash sync speed. The flash sync speed for the Olympus OM1 is only 1/60th of a second, so anything faster than that is going to give you a shot like this where only part of it is exposed by the flash.

Generally, cameras of that vintage will mark their maximum flash sync speed in some way. I don't own an OM-1 so I can't be sure, but looking at pictures, it would appear that they have the flash-safe speeds labeled in blue and the rest in black.

As a rough guide, the flash duration is something between 1/500 and 1/10,000.
Higher power levels (like full power) will be closer to 1/500, maybe a bit slower, and lower power levels will be much faster.
This is gonna be your effective shutter speed when shooting in a decently dark environment, ie when the majority of the exposure is from the flash.

So you don’t have to worry about shutter speed motion blur.
This is only a concern will fill flash, i.e. when big part of the exposure is contributed by ambient light and not flash.

My Petri mf4 suddenly stopped working. I can't advance the frame and I can't fire the shutter. The internal electronics seem to work since the LEDs in the viewfinder are lighting up. I tried firing the shutter via the normal shutter release button and via a cable release but both didn't work. I suspect that the film advance lever got stuck somehow and thus can't advance. Got any pointers on how I would go about fixing it? The mf-4 was such a pleasant camera to use - the mirror slap on that thing was crisp as hell.

Its either an inherent flaw of the lens(a nice one at that) or he didnt clean the lens well enough, because he did mention it was completely caked in dirt, and when he shows "how easy it is" he takes off the front element but completely misses to mention cleaning the rear element.

The Fuji simulations look nice but don't come close. Film retains highlights much better than digital, and has its own look. You need to enjoy the process and not just the end results to shoot film nowadays, though. If you don't like it, just stick with digital. I have a nice Fuji digital body and I'm always babying it, buying nice lenses, worrying about resale value for my old bodies. With film, I can buy "full frame" point and shoots, rangefinders, SLRs, and medium format cameras for relatively cheap and then spend a couple hours chilling while developing and scanning.

The bigger image area means you're using a longer lens to get the same field of view. A 90mm lens will have the same FOV as a 40mm - with all the compression a 90mm lens normally introduces.

I can get a lot of 6x9 negatives for the price difference.

Downside, is 8 shits per roll. And roll-film is fiddly to change.

Compression is a result of perspective not focal length. What focal length gives you is detail, resolution. Cropping a pic taken with a 24mm lens will give you the same "compression" as one taken with 300mm lens. But detail will be lost, because you're using less area with the same grain size/pixel pitch.
What the 90mm will offer, however, is a shallower DoF for the same f-number.

Other than the inconvenience part I disagree. Digital by design has a choppy resolution, this is specially evident with digital audio. Analog can essentially be infinite kbps. High end audio systems are all vinyl, for good reason.
Now if we talk stuff like tapes, sure, they're inferior and their appeal is quirks like you say.
With film, it all depends on the film size and the emulsion. Sensors are limited in size, with film that isn't strictly true. The Smithsonian Polaroid comes as an extreme example, but with more mundane hardware you can get a large format camera for under $200 and then some lens and it's guaranteed to wreck pretty much every digital system out there in terms of quality. Won't be as convenient, though. But even a medium format mogs most digital cameras out there. For 6x9, the resolution is equivalent to roughly 50MP.

most people target a bitrate that is beyond human perception, super sampling in production at times to deal with aliasing, etc. the web compression formats like mp3 are not relevant.

no it can't. this is just stupid, man. you're limited by the materials you use and the surface area you're using them on. the equivalent "resolution" of film isn't even close anymore. it looks nice and all, but this is the wrong argument to make.

read about mastering for vinyl. you often have to cut the crap out of bass, downmix lower frequencies to mono, etc. its an incredibly limiting medium. people like it "because it sounds warm" but what they are hearing is all the lower frequencies being mashed together out of necessity, and then boosted at the preamp stage.

I'll definitely try to get that lens - found some listings for 60€ but I think I'll wait for a cheaper one. I had some luck with getting FD lenses by buying T70s with lenses attached. Just got a T70. T50 and the 35-105 3.5-4.5 for 10€.

hell yea that's what im talking about. you can just f8 or something can't you? there were a ton of pre-1950's cameras that were zone focus only.

I've got a Zorki myself, the kind that looks just like a Leica IIa without slow shutter speeds and a much shittier uncoupled rf/vf. Serial puts it at 1954. The Industar-22 lens is fucking cash though, very sharp and all the grandpa camera glow and flare you could ask for -- except it's single coated, where proper greatgrandpa cameras' lenses would be uncoated and scratched up to fuck.

So, consider one of those as well. Or just an actual Leica II.

Oh yeah, the 8x10 crop isn't as good, I guess, but you can still crop it to fuck blow it up to the size of a house before you get grain. This may have been on a mamiya and render my point moot but it's all I have on me right now. Cut off the tree on the left and you have 6x6 and 2 more photos on the roll.

Shot some photos during a small seaside trip. Kinda still fussing about scanning methods. Not too happy with the results. Dunno if it's the lenses that I use (old Pentax lenses from my dad) but it all feels a bit too soft.

I used the following lenses:
Pentax-m 50mm 1.7, 40mm 2.8 and 28mm 3.5. Shot using a cheap Ricoh KR-5 body I had laying around. Majority is shot between 8-11 and all on Portra 400.

Dunno, I was expecting a bit more detail but still learning atm. The Olympus XA2 I have shoots sharper it seems.

It's probably the scans, if anything. Or you moved. Bendax kit is light as fug and still slaps, if you know what I mean. If you have black and white film, that'll remove any chromab and you can see pure sharpness, because those lenses are really fucking good. The 1.7 isn't as sharp as the 2 but that's on a hair splitting level and not whatever this problem is. I'd go with slightly misaligned scanner unless you're doing camera scans.

As is, they look like the mid/corner crops from a MF tessar, which isn't bad. I'd shoot the shit out of it because the slight oddness in all fielss is highly coveted, which is why I know what bendax lenses look like. Unless you're shooting from a tripod and know your scanning is settled, it's hard to say more.

Yeah I think it's the scanning as well. Read up about it here on /p/ and checked some vids. Had a helpful anon recommend me to use a DSLR instead. Still have a Canon 5D that I could use, but no macro lens atm. Really want to get one though as I also love to film insects and other bugs: https://vimeo.com/72521825

Cheap macro rings also work great. Autofocus gets so fucky that I don't think you'd need it if you used magnification when focusing. Dunno if the 5d has that or it's the only benefit of mirrorless.

Lumiere Autochrome. I knew I liked it for some reason. I'm a pictorialist at heart. Those lenses get weird the more you demand of them, others just fail. It looks like it should have been a terrible shot for various reasons but no.

I barely use autofocus to begin with. Was looking at the Samyang 100mm 2.8 macro lens. I have two other lenses by them and they are so sturdy and sharp.
