Read The Writer's Journey. At a very basic level it's a person that wants something that they can't have. A good story will be multi-dimensional with a character's unconscious needs in conflict with their conscious desires. Mystery is actually the opposite of good storytelling, the artist should try to reveal what's normally hidden.

This Is the most important thread on here. I've seen you guys post good pics before. There has to be a seasoned non gear fag that has input. Cartier-bresson had the deciding moment. I need more reasons 'why' to take a photograph, or in my case, video.

What are you trying to shoot, documentary or something more arty-farty? I don't think there is a one-size-fits-all kind of answer.

For video, criteria would be...
-Local area
-without talking heads, me or my wife
-something i can post online
i can't figure out how to make a story without actors. I like psychedelic transcendence type stuff, but dislike excessive artsy fartsy stuff.

Photography
-anything good, i don't know when to take a picture, and when not too.

I'd say it's about evocation. Something in picture and video that seems to say more than what it shows.
Most portraits in photography basically mean if you were to write it down: "i show how this person smiles" or "how they look in the dark".
When you start to actually tell a story that is not done in one sentence, like "this person looks at something that we can't see. She seems frightened by it and yet is strangely drawn to it." then you can go start going into narrative photography and video.
