how do you learn to make your photos art?

I don't mean copying something thats popular "art" on instagram i mean making your own art that applies directly to yourself and came from within based on your own lifes experiences?

Well, you express yourself. It's your point of view, your choices, you decide on what to show and how to show it. If I'd hold your hand through the process, it wouldn't be your art. You can express yourself through showing a thing other people would miss, through showing situation from a specific point of view, through building an interesting atmosphere with objects/colors/postprocess, there are many ways to be yourself there.

there's no secret. You're paying for the privilege to be in a small community of similarly ambitious people who are driven to accomplish the same thing as you, led by a smaller community of experts who have already done what you would like to do. you have access to a deeper pool of resources than what you could manage alone (i've held original sugimoto monographs, etc), and like it or not, you're paying for a piece of paper that vouches for your expertise. there's also very little intelligent discussion of photography as art on the internet. most of it still happens in academia, galleries, museums, in person and on paper.

Also look for graduation rates if it's too high you're going to an adult daycare center if it's too low you're wasting your tuition money

i-i've won a couple local photo contests and have been published in a magazine once, d-does that mean i'm better than ""academic"" photographers now?

You know all those photographers that are really famous and shit not just talking youtubers I mean the ones they write whole articles about. they usually study other mediums of art and incorporate them into their work

What I mean by that is you need to literally engross yourself in all things art or at least the type that interests you fuck dude you don't even have to limit your self to art. study different cultures history and shit like that read some books. idk use some critical thinking when consuming media instead of worrying about spec sheets and what crazy newfangled camera jared polin is shilling at you

I swear you do this and your creative juices will start flowing

I suggest getting a small note pad and writing down your ideas and taking a day to shoot those concepts it doesn't matter if it's dumb cliche our above your skill level the whole point is to help you visualize and crate your ideas the more you do this the easier it becomes

Another thing you can do is literally copy whatever photographer interest you bc you might not realize this but the minute you start copying some mother fuckers work you might want to do something slightly different and boom you made it your own and nobody can tell you shit

they had it all figured it out until about the beginning of '900 and jewish modern art

the human brain responds well to certain stimuluses (positioning, light, rhytm, simmetry, etc.) and it will still work the same in 1000 years

"educated" /p/osters were educated from marxists teachers (i.e. all of academia) that tell them rules are only to be learnt so you can break them.

In reality past a brief moment of shock/surprise, the brain quickly categorizes "modern" art as trash.
Rules work, not because of their authority, but because they are the distilled concepts of what has been proven to work and what not.

I already do that and I didn't go to art school. My foundation was from drawing things I took interest in when I was young, I always had a desire to make a visual representation of what I saw and had a response to. The thing is that photography is a visual medium, so the rules of painting and drawing tend to be the same. It helps to study those because you learn how to see light and hone composition, framing, balance etc. I do believe it can be taught but where to learn and how to learn is tricky.

this, take a look at any artists early work and you'll see a shit ton of derivative crap. once you've defined your personal taste by looking at different artists you enjoy you should imitate that style and recreate your favorite photos. as time goes on you'll understand what you do and don't like about their photos, and eventually you'll develop your own unique style. it's the same thing people do when they learn to draw traditionally.

you could start by taking photos
"art" usually consists in either aesthetic merit (which most photos have one way or another, anyway) or conceptual merit (can be applied after the fact through theory and reflection, or the foundation for a series of shots)
