Found le edgy contrarian. It’s not the best tool for every situation but I find it pretty cool to get relatively high quality aerial shots for a few hundred bucks. 10 years ago you would’ve needed a helicopter for that.

I feel like it died off pretty quickly as the FAA started cracking down on it and more and more restrictions popped up, at least in the states. In my city, some guy got a pretty blunt cease and desist/takedown notice over a video he shot hovering over downtown skyscrapers, on the basis he didn't have permission. You are pretty limited in where you can fly in the states, including how far away and over where and near what. Not only that, but DJI is basically cucked out of selling and they seem to be the only serious drone manufacturer. The aerials are cool, but drones are limited by tiny little cameras that come nowhere near a D-SLR or mirrorless in quality. The serious aerial stuff is still almost exclusively shot with bigger cameras out of a private chopper or plane.

Call me a grumpy old man but I find this pretty dumb, not only does it piss off local authorities and the FAA and make other photographers look bad, it's also extremely dangerous. I'm not hoping you fall to your death, but it's a very real possibility. Hopefully, you just grow out of it instead.

I'm in the states, and I'm actually OK with how relatively uncommon drones are where I am. Just makes it easier for me to make some money from it. I'm actually a little salty that the Part 107 cert no longer costs $160, because it was kind of a paywall to keep a lot of uncommitted people out, but oh well.

DJI didn't really get fucked out of selling here, it's just on a long list of companies that US companies need prior permission to share tech with. You can still easily get DJI drones.

I'm looking for a sub $500-ish drone, any recommendations? Should I be looking at used DJI on Facebook/Offerup/Craigslist? or is there a better option?

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out on those. I don't really care about video, as much as straight photography, not sure if that makes a difference, I just want some quality pictures I can drag into lightroom if the need arise.

The mini 1 has great photo and video (the 1 does not shoot in raw, but I believe the 2 does, you should double check though.) Compare different models and decide what you need. If you want anything better you willl likely want to go with a pro or an air but those begin at ~$1k.

There's not much between Phantom 3 and pro version, and regular tends to go for a lot less. You do get 4k video with 3 pro, so that's something. 4 batteries and filters are great, though, adds a lot of value to the pack. Phantom 4 vs 4 pro is different story. 4 pro and advanced are the one to hunt for if you're buying used and looking for top quality. They have the same sensor as mavic 4 pro, and offers faster fps speeds and bit rates.

Also surprised that no one has mentioned insurance in here. Things go wrong with drones, frequently. Neighbor's roof, rivers, lost signal, etc.

Get insurance if you don't like seeing $1000 drift off on its own and then land in a pond.

I think the DJI care only extends to new products. But many renter and homeowner insurances will cover drones. You'll have to do some digging around on your own for that.

False. You don't need a part 107 to fly it for fun, only if you're gonna do something in furtherance of a business. If it's over .55lb though you need to register it with the FAA which is $5 for 3 years.

Currently, the Part 107 commercial operator license is $160 and a pretty non common sense test. The $160 fee is going away sometime in March, but you'll still have to take a basic UAS knowledge test.
