What I used to do, last time I actually tried long exposure on film was max out asa, aperture and shutter speeds until I could meter it with the camera and then count the clicks back to the actual asa and aperture I would be using, and then adding what I thought was the appropriate amount of time stops to get it back to the right exposure.
I still don't understand why it didn't work with the whole exposure triangle being theoretically correct for a proper exposure but I am kind of retarded and tend to think in round about ways to solve problems.
