I see some cameras marketed as "freezeproof down to -10 degree celsius". What is supposed to happen with cameras that aren't "freezeproof" if you use them in such a cold? How exactly are the cameras freezeproofed?

usually that number is just how cold they could find to test it. most cameras can handle much colder temperatures. but the main issue is the grease starting to solidify with the cold making the mechanisms lock in place or stick. the most common issue being having your shutter become stuck open or being slower then it should be.

A lot of it has to do with battery chemistry. Many batteries simply won't provide the voltage needed to run the camera.

What happens if it snows enough to cover the exit of the circular stairs but not enough to reach the walkway? Do you have to jump down? How do you get back in?

Not OP, but I've been wondering this as well. That makes sense.
I wonder if it's published anywhere exactly what type of grease various camera makers use. maybe we could get a little bit of it and run some tests on it.
I could just stick a battery in my pocket to warm it up a bit but I don't think there's anything I can do about the grease.

Pretty sure grease nowadays has great thermal ranges. Pic related goes to -40 and is cheap. Batteries are more of an issue.

Not to mention, you'd have to be a left-handed swordsman to make use of the stairs, and there's no murder-holes on the bottom so if you got attacked they could just cut your supports down.

i dunno i've taken my a6000 to -20C winter camping trips overnight and it was fine, if you sleep with batteries on you then they'll stay warm.

I think autofocus might be slowed but i was using manual lenses so it wasn't a big deal
