JPEG format images are actually re-encoded every time the screen calls an update, so for most people that's 60 times a second, since their screen is updating at 60hz.

To ensure that your JPEG files stay fresh for longer it is recommended that you set your screen's refresh rate as low as it can go, don't go any higher than 30hz.

If you're using a high-refresh display such as 120/144hz that's really not recommended and if you've got one of the 240hz screens you can actually see your JPEGs rotting right before your eyes.

Of course this only applies to modern LCD or "Liquid Chromium Display" technology, since it is a very harsh digital signal it has a sawtooth effect on the image. Older CRT or "Cosy Rosy Tube" displays are much softer on the image since instead of a harsh electrical pulse being driven through each pixel it is instead being gently bathed in ionic rays, which are actually good for the image!

I really recommend you find yourself an old CRT if you're looking to get started in the finer aspects of JPEG enjoyment.

This, the JPEGs I backed up on CD-ROM years ago have lost so much sharpness it's ridiculous. I guess you have to learn to start shooting RAW somehow.

it's only true for filesystems with inodes. when the fs updates the timestamp of the last access of the file, then it has to re-encode the jpeg. this is why on sd-cards with FAT fs jpegs do not lose quality. this is why camera manufactorers use exclusively FAT. but in NTFS, which only windows use, they lose quality due to the forced re-encoding to update the timestamp. this is why pros use linux oder freeBSD-based fancy fruit-logo products. there you can use fs which do not update or just in index tables.

Another trick: duplicate the JPEG file you want to edit and then preview the copy when you're planning your edits. You'll only lose a little quality when you copy the file, and then the duplicate will be the one losing quality while it's up on your screen.

Most programs let you copy the edits you made from one file over to another, so when you're done editing the sacrificial duplicate, simply apply the same changes to the original without opening it. Then quickly export the original as a PDF (Permanent Data Format) to preserve the final quality.

You have to upgrade your jpeg to the new jp2 standard. Windows is kinda stupid with roll outs so the easiest way to do it is to delete system32 so that the database is rebuilt and the upgrade is automatic.
the easiest way to do this is to:
>Start command prompt as admin

> type C:\Windows\system32

>Then type del *

After that it will start refreshing your databases. When that is complete then you can reboot your computer and enjoy pixel perfect resolutions.

That is inaccurate. When you edit a jpg and save it as a jpg, it loses 10% of its data. That's why people shoot jpeg to not get that 10% loss from raw to jpg conversion. The more you know.

If you're going to make prints of your jpeg file, don't use "print preview" because that renders it on a digital paper which also takes a 5 or 10% quality hit. I forget forget it was but Caspere knew this.
