It seems more that Canon + Nikon are much more of a standard presence within American news pools, likely due to the fact that a lot of news agencies and print media own the camera gear, and they likely have supply contracts with Canon or Nikon.
Freelancers get to pick their own gear, so likely choose something they like, or consider more convenient for their use. I've seen some freelancers use Pentax, and some have started to adopt the Panasonic cameras.
I've only seen Japanese photojournalists use Olympus or Fuji though.
I think it's just the fact that EF and F mount lenses are ubiquitous, and just upgrading the body to a higher res one is all they need to do to fulfill the relatively simple brief of "photography this person".
