The greatest works are often recognized as such thanks to either pushing technical boundaries of originality or thanks to being emotionally challenging, either to viewer or the creator. My point is that as a creator, it's not difficult to recognize if you are going towards any of those things. As long as you express yourself aesthetically in a way that satisfies you, that is enough.
