it's because manufacturers completely changed the type of sensors in cameras around the D3 era. Before that, everything was CCD. After, it was CMOS. A lot of it is stupid nostalgia for an era before a lot of the posters on this board were old enough to own a camera, which bums me the fuck out as a young man of 35 years. And a lot of that nostalgia is propped up by bloggers who write these effusive, ethereal articles about how "you can just see it, you know?" as an attempt to offload some of their old inventory.
Article goes up --> prices on ebay skyrocket as young impressionable photographers start snatching up the cream puffs --> blogger sells his shitty cameras. it's a tale as old as.. well, the late 2000's, when you started seeing all these articles written about how fucking incredible the Yashica T4 is.
