I mean like... it's obviously important in post-processing, but when I'm taking a picture, I'd rather focus on getting my subject in shot/focus and making sure the exposure settings won't wash the image out.
The only thing I'd ever want to worry about is overblown highlights and unrecoverable shadows. That and for long exposure night photography, ensuring that I've actually managed to capture details.
