For stills with my phone or point and shoot digital, I prefer 4:3 unless it is a landscape, then I might use 16:9.
For video, well I'm more limited by what equipment.
I generally prefer 4:3 for creative reasons. I would also use 16:10/1.66:1 if I had a camera that could.
Not a big fan of 16:9, but many things won't let you go hi def without it. 16:9 is good for dash cams.
I mostly despise really wide formats like 2.35:1 and wider.
Really wide formats suck at drawing attention to people, characters.
You are more limited by the background.
