You can use some of the Tamron Di USD primes with VC on the F5/6 though. The 35, 45 and the 90 macro at least I think.

I bought one over the summer but I haven't used it much. Mine was a non-cpu version. The chromab was pretty harsh but I think the lens corrections will work once I input the lens data into the camera prior to shooting. It's crazy sharp though.

Wonderful lens, ultrasharp. For the most part the Ken Rockwell reviews on AF-D lenses are spot on, I just got a 180 ED AF-D and it's amazing. Almost my entire prime setup is AF-D lenses so I can use them on older Nikon film bodies, then I got an F100 anyway lol. Manual aperture option lets me use them on my F3

Some of the AF-D lenses are very fast focusing, the 70-210 f4-5.6 AF-D model is notorious for it. Don't sleep on AF-D glass some of it is still very good today.

I'd spend a bit extra and get a used 35mm f2 af-d. It's full frame glass so if you eventually upgrade to something like a d800 you'll be able to keep using it.

Heck no, lenses are stable as fuck when it comes to their price once they are "used". So buy it used, sell it for the same prices if you don't need it anymore. Buying new just costs you more without any real benefits. When properly handled they don't really deteriorate.

All art lenses from (I believe) the 85 1.4 onward have electronic apertures. They will likely work, my 85 does, but f1.4 only.
The 24mm 1.4 still has a mechanical aperture.

It's the most common Nikon first upgrade lens, can't really go wrong with it.
Get it used for half the price on mpb or keh.

If you need pictures in more cramped spaces it's a bit narrow.
You could look into a Sigma 17-50 2.8 for a bit more flexibility.
It's a nice step up from the standard kit lens and not too pricey.

I have a D1x that I got for free like a year ago, it came with 3 batteries but of course they barely hold a charge anymore.
There are some aftermarket ones listed online but I'm pretty sure that at this point those have been lying around in a warehouse for a decade.

Try it out! I shoot almost exclusively in vertical orientation and it helps a lot. It adds some bulk but it's not like a DSLR was gonna fit in a pocket to begin with.

Don't know about d800 but canon adds an extra strap lug so you can carry your camera vertically also.

I own a 5D2. It's like 12 years old or so. Works like new, save for some minor issue in the viewfinder led display that cuts one of the numbers.
There's still new cameras being made, notably the 1DX III which was so advanced when it came out it had AF features no mirrorless camera in the lineup had yet. It will be produced for a few more years. I'm sure you'll be able to find working DSLRs in 15 years, the question is how expensive they will be and if you'll be able to process the data, specially with RAW files which are proprietary and specific to each camera model. You'll probably need an old computer that somehow still works to be able to get your pics out.

Well Nikons are out, they refuse to sell spare parts to anyone since 2016. They're bricked when anything fails, and it's very doubtful that they'll have repairs open for dslr, even if they don't go bankrupt before that. Canon and the rest still sells spares to 3rd party repairs, but sensors themself do age.

I'm sure SD, USB standard is here to stay so at worst you'll need more dongles/cables. As for software goes you can edit no problem old camera's raws like 1Ds mark 1 or 5D1, or 10D for that matter in lightroom, photoshop.

Anon, future computers may be unable to run current software. Who knows what kind of architecture changes await us. 15 years is a long time. A 2006 Mac would be needed to run Mac software from 2006, for example. And I'm not sure how things are with the new Macs but I suspect the new M1-based models can't run 2019 Mac software as it's ARM. With PCs you're luckier for now, but who knows what the future holds. x86 could go away. And still, sometimes there's issues. For example there's 2015 laptops you can't use Windows 7 on because it causes instability and other issues, so you're forced to use a newer version. And some software doesn't play nice with newer Windows versions. Not saying this will necessarily mean you will be unable to use the stuff, but don't be surprised if it turns to be the case. Our best hope for long term compatibility is free open source software. But we know it's not the most refined to use.

CR2 is just an extension, the actual format is each camera's. That's why you need Camera Raw updates to support new ones even though the files are CR2.

Optical quality wise they're hit or miss, mechanically they're excellent, and I love the smaller form factors. I wish we had modern designs of smaller primes, the whole value of a "prime" is wasted when it's the size of a zoom lens and weighs two pounds.

I think it's pretty unlikely that somebody like Adobe are gonna put out software updates that remove support for older cameras. Even if the cameras are long past being out of print, it wouldn't make sense from any standpoint unless some serious change to hardware/software absolutely necessitates it.

Nice photo, the barrier on the side looks a bit weird though. I was surprised to see it was a 20mm, not a lot of distortion (was going to ask if it was a 24 and then saw there was EXIF data). I imagine the maneuver to take it can be a bit complicated unless there's more than one lane to use (the barrier sort of hints at this though, you don't see many two lane roads with them). Good to know 1/60s is enough to get the blurred wheels.

1/60th at 60mph is safe and that 20 was on a crop sensor and the shot itself is a little cropped I had a bunch of my pro shit at CPS for cleaning and CLA at the time

This whole set was hilarious, we used my friends turbo Ford Festiva to do all the rollers. It was the only thing with enough room in the back for me to get low to the ground.

Problem is, it was BP swapped and had a rear-turbo setup so I had to hang my body out of the back with the hatch open, held open with a Vise-Grip, have my friend sit on my legs and I held the camera a few inches off the road with LiveView on and hold my breath so I didn't get carbon monoxide poisoning, which almost happened anyway from backdraft.

Fun fact, the Festiva beat the 930 turbo in a roll race to 140mph by two cars

Also for your Jaguar, check out FCPEuro. They have an interesting lifetime free replacement policy on parts, even consumable ones. Hate to sound like a shill, but I've got some killer deals from them in the past so I thought I'd pass on the info. The catch is that the warranty isn't transferable, it stays with the owner. You sell the car, the new owner doesn't get it. Bought an Aisin (OE) pump from them for a Volvo S40 T4 a while ago, like half the price as the one with the Volvo logo not ground off or something like that lol.

That track car will eventually see 10,000rpm with ITBs and a beefed up valvetrain so I need to be sure the car can handle it.

FCPEuro is the jam I've already bought some stuff from them for the XJR, there's a lot of hard to find bits for those gen 1 XJRs on there that no one else has, even the dealer.

Very nice. I was a big fan of the articulated screens on Nikon D5x00 but I bought a fixed screen Canon recently and I miss it a lot, it was amazing for ground level shots. The movements on that Pentax are madman tier lol

Hard to post photos on here because I usually take photos of my family (unless you want to see beer cans and other boring stuff). But I can report that the sensor performance is very similar to the original 5D (no surprise) and I am very impressed with the low amount of typical canon noise banding on this one. Also the autofocus is amazing - I have a dozen lenses and they all focus correctly for some dumb reason. Unheard of. Must be a lucky body because my 1D and 1Dmk2N always had issues.
