I'm starting to see a lot of people actually recommend these cheap lenses for artistic purpose. Do you think that their popularity will drop the price down from the first party lenses? Or could we start seeing first party manufacturers make manual focus lenses of their own?

If he took the photo at any time of day other than the golden hour, then I'll eat my words, but this photo does not look like it was shot at f/1.4 or that it was affected significantly by a "soft" lens. What it looks like more than anything is he just fucked with the contrast of an otherwise decent photo. It looks like it started out as an attractive sunset-through-the-trees sort of landscape, probably shot at f/8, if I had to guess.

What constitutes a lot of people? A youtube channel? A website or two?

I don't think a handful of bandwagon jumping hipsters is enough of a market to make it viable

I've no reason to doubt thim. I've gotten same exact results with my cheap f1.4. Look at smeared corners, and if it wasn't practically black and white, you'd see crazy purple fringing.

This is nothing new, it's just "trendy" now.

People have been taking advantage of the flaws in technically shitty lenses for dreamlike/abstract/impressionistic effects for literally decades. I was doing this in the film days.

That would be fantastic, but I don't think that they want that. With auto focus lenses they own their customers. Electronic lenses have finite life span, when they break down they need replacement, or – if even possible – servicing using manufacturer made parts. Continued revenue is guaranteed. Manual focus lenses don't have infinite lifespan, but it certainly exceeds the life of any user.

It's obviously an 85mm f1.4 look at the exif, nitz. Also the picture is fucking tiny, unless it's heavily cropped it's less than 1/4 of original width, that will make just about any lens short of the very worst look sharp.
