I love Juergen Teller. I saw these on tw*tter and everyone was raging. He goes over people’s heads, they were adding their shitty little filters on the images trying to improve the shots, embarrassing dilettantes

Am I committing a hate crime if I said I 'don't get it'?. Okay, every shot doesn't need to be shot at f/1.2. Fine, not every shot needs to avoid blowing highlights. We don't always need interesting compositions and can place a subject centre-frame. But something about these (and other pics of Teller whom I just googled) just don't really do it for me. Each to their own.

Not your OP, but Teller is known for an intentionally amateur aesthetic. He embraces the imperfections of the model and the art and that's the point. People get pissed because, well, that's art.

Actual poster of that comment here. More or less sometimes I'm in a busy area shooting when I show up to a gig early or im walking past a tourist area and a lot of times people try to take photos of people. I more or less give them like a 1 minute crash course in aperture, iso, and shutter speed and make memorable comments so it sticks with them. Sometimes people offer to pay me, but i usually decline. It's just more wanting to share my knowledge with people interested in my craft. My most recent times doing this were during a snow storm a few weeks ago. I was walk through time sqaure and this boy friend was struggling to get a good phone photo of his girl and i explained him that on the phone you can't get a well lit face on a bright background so to use the face up close and angle it so that the background can be seen but isn't in focus enough that the persons face isn't out. These two girls were taking photos just a block or so from the last encounter and the mood struck and i heard her comment the photos keep coming out blurry so i just quickly told them to avoid going under 250 in low light, keep the aperture at the lowest and try not to crank the iso over 3200 saying it will appear grainy after that and that movement blurs a lot under 250.

Lot of people missing the point.

Teller (and other fashion photogs) aren't shooting to get a technical, well rounded photo. They're shooting a subject and in this case it isn't the background, it's the model juxtaposed against the pedestrian background. It's almost the same as isolating the subject with depth of field.

I had a music teacher sum it up when we were listening to John Cage. It's hard for really good musicians to listen to Cage's works on prepared piano because the tones are so dissonant and alien to decades of training but that doesn't make the work bad, it actually makes it more interesting because you are forced to come off your high horse and explore the work as the work and not what you have been trained to expect works to be.

Yea, exactly. I'd call his work quite punk. I like how ugly and scuzzy it is, and the more people it pisses off because it's not "beautiful", the better.
His aesthetic, especially his pictures of old and middle aged men and women reminds me of the band Viagra Boys who have a similar ugly middle aged Euro guy aesthetic.

It's a smart way to do portraits.

The first thing people start talking about here in picture threads is technical critique. "You missed focus", "Why did you shoot at 1/2000?", "You should have shot at 80mm instead of 100mm". A lot of critique seems to miss the big picture questions of "What is this and why am I looking at it?"

No, it's conventionally really bad. The overexposed clipped highlights are bad, low contrast between model and the tree is bad, the pose is weird, cars behind her are significantly more detailed than her face, hair or clothes, and it doesn't even look level.
So there clearly has to be a banana taped to wall kind of inside artistic heritage behind this shit, to "get it".
