Guise I just bought a film camera in a fleabay lot with some lenses I wanted, and so now I need to set up a wee darkroom in the garage; what's the absolute cheapest dirtiest way to develop a roll of film myself? Barebones, mind. This is just to have the experience of doing it.

1) the film wasn't tightly wound after you finished shooting and light seeped in
2) if expired + room stored it may be due to age

if it's not on the negatives:
1) it's light seeping through the edge of the film and film holder while you're scanning

Found an undeveloped but exposed roll from anywhere between 5 - 20 years. What do I tell the photolab? It's from a relative that passed away, it would be nice to get at least some sort of photos from it

there's nothing you can tell them. they'll develop it just like any roll of film. if the film has degraded significantly there's not much you can do to get better results (assuming its c41)

I just developed a 20 year old roll from my dad's camera. The photos came back completely washed out sepia tone with 0 contrast. I was able to pull a decent amount of detail just by processing the scans in photoshop.

fuck I am so at the end of trying to scan this piece of shit film. I've tried scanning this Fuji C200 with VueScan, Epson, manual conversion in photoshop, ColorPerfect etc and nothing seems to remove the awful pinks and just overall shitty look of this roll.
I know this definitely isn't what C200 looks like but I have no idea what to do at this point, please god help

Your main issue is white balance, maybe you're thrown off by the blue lightleak too.
Clicking the picker for neutral grays in the white balance tool and slicking on the metal table will do most of the work for you.
From there on, if you need anything more specifically (don't like how the film renders some colours, or how the inversion software inverted the scan), you can adjust selectively with selective colour.
In my quick edit for instance, I just clicked the white balance picker on the table, then selectively added tons of yellow to the blues to fix the lighleak cast (too lazy to do it "properly" with masking, and in this photo it works fine), then shifted reds a bit to cyan and to yellow, to remove some pinkishness.
Would that be closer to what you want?

Thanks for the advice, I really don't mind the blue lightleak and the warmth, what gets me is just getting decent looking skin. In the bottom left in both photos there's such an unnatural pink that just drives me up the walls

Yeah their licensing is so shitty, and it's a niche software anyway, that it's very hard to find a cracked version.
Get the scans by the lab and see if you like them better.
For what it's worth, I also find C200 and XTra to have a bit of pink/pastel bias on skintones, and a bit magenta in the shadows.
Quite manageable though with a good profile as a starting point, and some editing when needed.

Going through my previous C200 rolls I can defs see that it does tend to run away with the magentas, but then I get scans like this from the lab where I'm 100% sure there was more pink on the face irl but then get this type of skin

Huh, seems we differ a little in taste because your criticisms are some of my favorite things about those pics! I like the asymmetry and color from those tree trunks on the right, makes the setting feel more present and real. And in the bw one can you explain why the backlight doesn't work? I like how soft and subtle the shading in her face turned out. I pretty much never edit my photos aside from occasionally cropping and removing artifacts. I also shoot on mirrorless, so there's that. Hard to get things to look exactly how I want every time but it's super gratifying when it turns out. Anyways yours all have a nice surreality to them. The hair and dust is just a big pet peeve for me

Thing is, there are too many variables.
The inversion software being the biggest one, especially if it's a fuji machine scanning some fuji film.
Also, the hard part is not balancing a single thing, but balancing that thing without ruining the rest. In some photos it's easy, in some not so much.
This pic you posted for instance, if there were a pinkish cast on the skin, you might try adding some greenish tint. (I think there's some green added btw). And in *this* photo, because of the green background (trees, grass), not only would it not ruin the rest, but the applied green tint might even enhance it.
If you tried the same with a different photo it might not work as well.

I think the you're right about different sensibilities, it's just a little flat for me; if I were printing it in a dark room I'd probably be happier with something like pic rel with a 3.5 or 4 contrast and burning in the face

Looking to upgrade from my Pentax Super Program. Really like it, but wish it was a little bit lighter/compact. Was looking at things like the Konica Hexar AF and Fujifilm Klasse, but I now think I should stick with an SLR. At least a max shutter speed of 1/1000. What are my best options with a £600ish budget, including a lens. Have been looking at things like the Olympus OM series, and the Pentax MX. The more I research my options, the more I think I might stick with my Super Program. I weigh the body at 508g which isn't bad at all, but I would be very interested in knocking off like 100-150g if such a camera exists!

If I decide to stick with the Super Program, what lens should I get? I currently have an SMC 50mm 1.4 lens, which I do like, but again, looking to upgrade. Probably looking for a similar type of lens, I.E very fast all rounder.

Yeah, I think it's gotta be the original for me. Photography for me is more about capturing the essence of the subject rather than projecting/directing your own vision so much, though there's definitely a place for that. When there are flaws in my photos I just try to accept them as part of the reality of the moment/subject. I'm more into this one but, I would rather get this shot by manipulating the camera settings and lighting when I took it. I would be super happy to get that then, but I just feel sort of icky manipulating it so much in post to try and reach a desired look. I prefer to leave em natural. Because the image lacks something. The surroundings build up like a framing. Yet there is nothing to look at. Looks like an empty image without a „reason“. Thinking about doing a panorama camera similar to a widelux with a LF camera with movements using a curved holder and a thin funnel to attach to the lens. Youd expose it kind of like a widelux by tilting the front standard in a way the thin funnel scans across the curved plane.

No. My question is on the basis of DSLR scanning producing sharper results than regular scans, and MF digital bodies offer the resolution levels of high-end scanners.
They should be a better option, but no one has tried scanning film with a GFX or a 645D or 645Z to see how they'd compare to a regular scan

The issue you're going to run into I think is getting a macro lens that's suitable, no? Not familiar at all with those cameras.

If you're just scanning 35mm, getting a medium format digital to scan with is overkiller. You'll probably max out 35mm resolution with a ~40mp FF camera.

Wow, thats incredible! I think I've basically narroweed it down to the G1, and either the 28 or 45mm lens. I'm still considering the T2 and the Yashica T5 though. I own all three of those if you have any other questions. The main difference between 35mm SLRS and point and shoots/rangefinder is the SLR has more precise focusing but not as good image quality. So like the point and shoots are less consistent but when they hit they hit.

Considered a Bessa? The only electronics in the Ms is the light meter. Your camera is always going to work. Max shutter speed of 1/2000s, bright viewfinder and, depending on your budget, entry to M-mount.

I'd really like an Olympus Pen Ft but there are many cons (also a lot of them have some weird focussing method in which you have to "guess" the distance to focus.

I have looked at them, but only briefly as I think they're out of my price range. Looking to spend around 700ish GBP, maybe stretching a bit if I get a couple of lenses with a G1 in a kit. Honestly the yashica is my favorite just cause you can throw it in a pocket or bag and not worry about it. The contax have titanium on the outside sure, but also more delicate insides. It's like a toyota vs an audi. Like if I were skiing off piste I wouldn't want anything not light and plastic. Sorry to throw you after deciding on the G1. I got mine with the 28 and 35 but only use the 35 (because 28mm sucks). I'm sure any prime you pick for that system is a winner. The 28 is dummy sharp, pic related on kodak gold with an economy scan.

You might've convinced me there :) The fact it is just SO light, makes me think I'd actually bring it to places and have it out when I need it, as opposed to it sitting in my backpack. Just size and and integrated flash.
The G contaxes are more capable all around, and the lenses are better, plus much wider selection.

About the "focusing issues" it's a load of bullshit.
Yeah they're not as fast or offer many different focus points like SLRs, and if you try to mindlessly use them like the latter they might get tricked.
But they're much better point and shoots.
It's a simple system really: just point the autofocus point right on where you want to focus, and it will focus there, simple as. Don't point it right on the verge of something (like verge of wall, or verge of head against a far away background), because the sensor might actually be pointing at the background and focus there. Same goes for shooting through glass (manually focus if you don't want to focus *on* the glass).
But those issues are even worse on point and shoots so I don't see the point saying "AF sucks on G". It doesn't suck and it's not inaccurate, it's just a simple mechanism that should be used as such without expecting any automation; it'll focus just where you tell it to.

I worked a full season last year, and it was one of the best times of my life. Was working in Courchevel of all places, so arguably one of the best ski areas in the world! Don't really want to become a lifelong season worker, but definitely something I want to do a couple more times eventually :)

It's not that anon. Of course people are gonna have bad experiences, we're talking about mass produced equipment that is decades old, there's gonna be failures.

The point is that some issues are exaggerated a huge lot, because the internet rumour mill takes a quote of some specific use case out of context and then everybody picks it up and keeps parroting it.
The contax G is case of that. Originally, when people talked about "AF issues" they meant compared to high end AF SLRs with multiple points etc. of the time. Not compared to point and shoots. Now because that comment is parroted, people end up thinking that the AF on the G is worse than point and shoots, which couldn't be further from the truth.
Similar to the reputation of the 35mm Planar.
People love to parrot it's "subpar", but in reality it's absolutely fine. They forget to mention that the original "reviews" they're parroting to describe it as subpar just say it's nothing impressive *compared* to the exceptional 45mm Planar, not that it's anything other than a very good performer compared to 35mm lenses in general.

I had one of those adaptors and had some of the worst vignetting imaginable
I got a tamron 85mm macro lens (105mm even better I hear) and it made the world of difference

I bought mine used for half that, if you're gonna be using it a lot it's worth the investment
my photos with the tubes were basically unusable
only alternative would be getting a 1:1 macro lens of whatever length, the longer the better, and seeing how much you can fit in frame. If it's a 50mm or something you might only be able to focus it at a certain distance and end up with a pretty small scan

I used to have a Minolta a few years back but i sold it as developing film in my area is a huge pain in the ass (only some people do it and you gotta know who).

Tbh I was planning on switching to 400h over Portra for a while now I like Fuji's colours a lot more, it just happened to get discontinued when I was gonna buy some. Superia is my go to cheap emulsion and Provia is my go to slide film.
Also even if they release it it's gonna be more expensive than the original, just look at how much more expensive Acros II is.

The shadows are rather steep on the EI400 exposure. I'd go EI200, but clearly if the alternative is shooting too slow to handhold or with an aperture that looks like shit, slightly worse shadows are the correct tradeoff.

That being said, I'd like to see this film at 800 and 1600.

Yeah 400 seems pretty bleh...
100 film isn't too bad to shoot handheld. I just shot a roll of Ektar 100 (though I did use a tripod for most of it) and before that Kodak Pro 100.
I don't think 100 is hard to shoot handheld if you're shooting in bright, sunny weather. And going to 1/60 with a wide angle lens is perfectly suitable.

Sometimes I feel like shooting 400 is *too* fast, if that's even a real complaint. Needing to step down to f/8 or even f/11 because 1/1000 is the fastest you can go is certainly less of a concern.
200 seems to be a nice middle ground

All my street stuff is at 800 ISO and either 1/1000 or 1/500 which balances me out from f22- f11 throughout the day. I just find it the easiest especially when I'm driving. If it seems to be a really sunny day I'll take an ND filter along

I have one and like it. I usually take it if I have to travel for work and don't have space or any guarantee of time to take photos to justify packing a bigger 35mm SLR camera.

They are nice and pocketable (jacket pocket) with the most common 38mm f1.8 lens. Good for walkaround. Framing is portrait if you hold the camera normally.

Viewfinder is a pentamirror not a prism and they are dark and frequently lost quite a bit of silvering.

They only have microprism, no split image focussing.

These two together make them really a daylight/bright light camera if you want to get stuff in focus and there isn't enough light to just stick it at f11.

24x18mm frame isn't too limiting unless you do something crazy like shoot delta/TMAX 3200 or crazy pushes of 400 speed film. Labs often don't understand half-frame and won't try to cut/scan your film if you don't dev at home.

Meter is ok, but they have a weird numbering exposure system on lens/in viewfinder which takes some getting used to.

Which I found weird because I thought the "X-TRA" in Superia X-TRA meant a 4th colour layer.
I have a roll of Superia 1600 on my shelf from 2009 which says "4th Color Layer" on the box and a 3 pack of Superia 400 that's in date with no such mention of a 4th colour layer which leads me to believe Fuji dropped the 4th colour layer for their consumer films a while back.
My thoughts are Fuji will either find a way to get the raw materials for the 4th layer for 400h or come out with a new emulsion that has 3 layers, Fujifilm Pro 400h II if you will.

I'm a beginner and all I have is a 12-60mm lens. Is this sufficient to learn framing from 12-60mm? As in, I can put it on a certain focal length and that is how a shot would be framed on a superior lens?

A 12-60 is perfectly fine to begin with. Play around with the focal lengths until you find one you like the most. You can start by googling the most common focal lengths such as 18, 27, 35, 50, setting it to one of those then just start shooting.

Stop me from pulling the trigger on buying a PlusTek Opticfilm 8100.
My Epson v330 has given up the ghost. It won't even scan basic documents anymore.
I've used a supermarket loyalty card to redeem points to buying a Canon LiDE 300, but that's just going to be a document and book scanner. The v330 sucked at scanning books, but it's also 9 years old...

At the very least, a document flatbed is cheap and does the job it needs to. But for 35mm... it seems like the only 2 decent options are PlusTek and Pacific Image. But Pacific Image seems unobtanium in Europe, and it's not like you're avoiding SilverFast software with Pacific Image anyway.
Anything else seems like it's a second hand Noritsu machine from some old photo lab that's decided to clear everything out in favour of machines that print 3x2 prints from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or a phone, because no one wants to get professional grade prints there anymore.

There are still cheap medium format cameras, just not Hasselblad, pentax or Mamiya ones. Imagine film stayed dead and nobody talked or knew about it, I doubt there would be many if any company making film on these days.

There might have been something there if you could position the car and the landscape in a more interesting way. The car on its own is nothing special, now that I see it closer up it actually looks oddly proportioned (though that has nothing to do with your photography.)

My lightmeters give some crazy values at night, so Ive honed in a natural looking exposure setting and found that shooting at f2 1/30 iso 800 gets me closest to human eye at night. More than that and street scenes start looking unnatural.

I've never shot 120 before, is this how you seal Kodak film? I had no clue what it meant when it said to fold under before sending, like what am I supposed to fold?

Yes, thats how. The fold is supposed to take out any slack. Doesnt really matter though.
