Here's my advice: the full moon is the easiest (always right after sunset, close the horizon, etc), but also the most boring phase to shoot. Try to shoot the crescent phase, or basically any time it's less than half full. Here's why:
The full moon has basically the flattest, most boring lighting. The light is, more or less, coming from directly behind you (the sun is in opposition to the full moon, which is why it looks the way it does), so you don't get any shadow detail that makes the moon look more interesting. Crescent or gibbous phases have the light coming in at a more oblique or perpendicular angle, which throws hard shadows across the surface and makes the moon look more detailed and interesting, even at low magnification. It's also just a more exotic look.
