basically this

a lot of those older bodies had pretty fast top shutter speeds and flash sync speeds though.
really the biggest limitation will be how they don't take modern sized memory cards.

Just absolutely everything. The technology is not old in absolute terms, but has been surpassed 1000x over in relative terms. Even an entry level camera made in 2013 is hundreds of times better and shouldn’t cost you much more for a good used copy.

The thing about fool frame is, the lenses are far more expensive than apsc lenses, especially if you want to take advantage of the big sensor with fast lenses. And any affordable lenses you might find will not be weather resistant, so you can take hurricane survival off the table.

I just bought a mint 2004 Canon 1ds mk2. There's no live view and the screen is a small tft with horrendous colour and brightness shift. The charger says the battery is full after one hour of charging, but i learned not to trust that, and just keep charging for a couple of hours. But besides some quirks, the experience is really enjoyable. I also own a 2014 apsc 1200d/t5, which i will keep for video or for times when weight is an issue, but as for enjoyment, looking trough a large prism viewfinder vs apsc mirror is like night and day.

Where are you seeing them for <$500 in good shape? They usually go for $700-$800 on fleabay.

That said: you are correct that a D800+50mm f/1.8 will kick ass on most bodies selling today. If you want to be in the Nikon lens system a D800 or D800E is the best deal going. If you want to be in the Canon lens system the 5Ds/sR is the best deal going, although as soon as new stock ran out they shot back up in price.

I guess that depends on how important RF mount + mirrorless features + video are to you. The R5 is an amazing camera. It has about 2ev more base ISO DR and is about 1ev cleaner at the highest ISOs that the 5DsR can go to (i.e. 6400 and 12,800). AI AF, video, IBIS, old lens adaptability...

That said, the 5Ds/sR deliver MF digital back like IQ for a fraction of the cost of the R5. The resolution really is addictive. High ISO is good (contrary to so many pixel peeping review claims) and even base ISO DR isn't that bad.

resolution, ISO performance, slow write/read times on memory cards, bad screens, potentially limited autofocus/metering compared to newer models, poorer battery life especially if the batteries have seen heavy use, limited repair options and no warranty.

that said I think they are a great way to go if you're on a budget
