My 35mm just broke and the repairs would cost more than the camera itself. Anyone got any recommendations for mid-price range 35mms?

What's the appeal of the RTS?
I have a broken one and it's autowinder.
But most of it makes no sense to me. There's a lever to lift the mirror that seems kinda... pointless for a 35mm. There's a button that's equivalent to a modern DoF button, there's some button on the front that I have no idea what it does, I think it might be an exposure meter thing.
But the film advance lever won't move, and the shutter button is also locked.

I'm using a Yashica FX-3 instead. It has one feature the RTS doesn't - a split image prism. In darker conditions, the microprism ring around the split image doesn't work right. The RTS only has a microprism, which I'd prefer to not rely on.

Metering is in real time and you get access to Zeiss lenses, some of which were even made in Germany
If you want better ergonomics, the RTS III has a bigger body with an actual grip, and goes to 1/8000 sec

Yeah, if you are already used to the ae-1, the a-1 is a great upgrade. They are dirt cheap, yet they are more functional and practical then the pricier ae-1 program, which is just a toy for rich kids.
I upgraded my ae-1 for an a-1 couple of years ago (my ae-1 is still completely functional tho, i just wanted a better body, and i found it for ~40 bucks in mint conditions)
Another + is all of your lenses will work just fine, otherwise there are a lot of other great alternatives.

I second this. If you can afford an FM or FM2, get one and use it well, for it is both far more capable and far more durable than you are. When it's not being used though, be sure to treat it like a priceless heirloom... because it is one, and people will be paying stupid money for them (especially for a black FM2n) in about 5-10yrs.

If you somehow cannot find any of those, get a Nikon FM2. - In all seriousness, I am fighting my natural urge to recommend a Nikon F2, the ultimate forever camera. An FM2 is smaller and potentially more serviceable and repairable in time to come. Either is certainly just about the best mechanical camera for learning and keeping to the fundamentals of film photography that you'll ever find. Just remember to use it without any metering assistance every once in a while as a way of keeping your exposure judgement ability in good use.

Olympus OM-1 by far. They're cheap as chips, lightweight, fairly sturdy, very reliable (and repairable) lots of knowledge base around them, and there's a LOT of good lenses available second hand for em at reasonable prices.

Most Nikon 35mms seem fairly pricey these days. Unless you already have a Nikon digital camera and lenses you can share between the two they're not great value for money anymore.

get imo the minolta x700, you will find all kinda lenses for cheap and they're not bad
the camera body is very nice and as i mentioned, you will find tons of lenses around
