hey /p/, if I don't have several hundreds to spend on a macro lens, should I rather get macro rings or an older macro lense like pic related ?

for the record I'm shooting on a X-S10

An older macro lens will be better AND less of a hassle, so you’ll be more likely to actually use it.

This isn't macro lens. This is vintage third party zoom with macro mode (read: crap). Dont fucking buy it!

If you have some wide angle, reserve Lens macro is fun and comes for free. Vintage 28, 24 can work.

If you have Fuji 27 you can go extension tubes. Its a Sharp Lens stoped down although focusing dinstance might be a little rough.

For vintage, you might want to but canon 50 f3.5 fd (no 1:1 macro unfort) or takumar 50 F4 (it has 1:1 macro). But you should probably go laowa. Their lenses are stellar, on a level or even better than canon l or Sony gm. And it is good to have some quality optics, not just for macro.

Laowa is fucking amazing. Pic related I got from Flickr. Its 65 f2.8 with Fuji xt100.

Reverse macro: you take your wide angle Lens, you reverse it and press on your camera mount. Cheap way to play with macro.

Well, it's cheap but its also a 80s zoom which focuses to 1:4 so its not going to be great.
A real ~$£€100 vintage 90mm prime macro lens likely would do better a job for macro.

You can also find good vintage macro lens
Vivitar 55/2.8 (1:1 macro, but hard to find for sweet price)
Canon FD 50/3.5 (1:2 Excelent IQ)
Tamron SP 90/2.5 (1:2 macro, sweet bokeh)
I also have these lens and can answer about them.

Not OP, but I believe that if you would post photos you take with that lenses etc, instead of photo of your setup it would be more helpful.

I've seen some nice closeups done with these older tele macro lenses. Modern have better coating, so they should not come close to what you have now in macro range, and they usually don't offer proper 1:1 either.

pretty sure samyang or yongnuo make some decent 1:1 macro lenses for around $200
If you want best value for money however save up for a laowa 60/65mm 2:1 which you can get for $400 new

Laowa currently makes the absolute best macro lenses available yet they are still affordable

OP here, I ended up digging out a Pentacon 2.8/135 and some macro rings. I am pretty satisfied with the results!

This picture is pretty meaningless for most, but the red key is about 19mm for reference.

Shot with my X-S10, a FX to M42, a 11mm, 16mm and 45mm (I assumed those were the sizes of the rings) macro rings and the Pentacon 2.8/135mm aforementioned

1. Get some lighting
2. Long lenses are less effective with macro rings that short one. If you would buy some vintage 28/24 and then add focus ring you could focus much closer and have bigger magnification than with 135.

Rings will be better than that garbage in the pic. You want a 1:1 macro lens. There’s also the 7artisans macro lens, and Opteka have a knock off of the Laowa 15mm f/4 1:1 macro for cheap. And some others. Look for older cheap 50mm ish macro lenses.

I forgot to mention there is also the Oshiro 60mm f/2.8 2:1 macro lens which is cheap, another Laowa knock off if you’re looking for something real cheap. The build quality is low on these knock offs but they do pretty well.

This is what "reverse lens macro looks like". In most crude way at least.
1. You take your wide angle Lens
2. You put it front element to Lens mount.
3. You hold it with your hand.

Kinda pain in the ass to shoot, but there are adaptera that do holding for you. Also, with that trick you can shot macro without any additional gear.

this lens (samyang 12) is like really bad lens do use it that way, because its hard to hold it without any light leeks, but even with this you can get semi-decent result.
