Olympus Corporation makes shittons of money from endoscopic and laparoscopic medical equipment. Not forgetting all their other stuff for microscopes and other medical optics. It's gotten to a point where Sony has given up competing against Olympus in the medical sector, and has formed a joint venture - Sony-Olympus Medical Solutions. Their concept? Olympus and Sony equipment sold together. Like... an endoscopy trolley featuring Olympus optics and medical implements for endoscopic procedures, with a Sony monitor, Sony Blu-Ray recorder and Sony image printer.
Olympus Corporation shed its camera division at the request of the camera division, since it was becoming impossible for them to make business decisions that weren't re-releasing the same camera but with something new... allegedly. Olympus could easily subsidise the camera division through medical division profits, as they had done so for the last 5 or so years, but of course this came at the cost of corporate executives with medical degrees not understanding the R&D that the camera division wanted.
Now, OMDS is free, and can do whatever the hell it wants to make cameras great again.
