Just like autofocus SLRs with the standard screen are not great, even though usable.
For instance, zoom preview is a bad user experience because you lose your framing when focusing, you can't even see what's in 80% of the frame. Not to mention what a hassle it is for non centrally framed subjects. Essentially the same focus-recompose drawback of an RF mechanism, only magnified and without the ability to focus while having a good view of your framing.
Focus peaking is better in that regards, but not that accurate (if it works at all) with older low contrast lenses at wide open. Also it's distracting - especially coming from manual cameras - since your viewfinder lights up like a christmas tree.
Any digital camera with an EVF can give accurate focus if you spend the time and effort.
It simply won't be as fast, convenient and uncluttered as a manual focus camera.
Obviously an AF camera, i.e. not designed to optically show focus and not built around the user being able to focus as fast and as conveniently as possible, will be worse than a manual focus camera that is designed to do just that.
Why is that even a controversial point?
