Can I get some good recommendations for a good beginner's camera for landscape photography in the 500 to 650 USD range? The two main one's I'm looking at are DSLRs; the Nikon D3500 and Canon EOS Rebel T7. However, my coworker the other day though told me mirrorless cameras might be better though since they autocalibrate and don't have a mechanical shutter. In particular they recommended the Sony a6000.

What does /p/ have to say?

$500 gets you a 2nd hand full frame Sony a7 and 50mm 1.8 lens.

Definitely don't get a DSLR, all the mounts are dead now, and a WYSIWYG viewfinder like on mirrorless will help you learn the exposure triangle and take fantastically exposed photos very quickly.

A6000 is fine if you're happy with the fact you will want to go full frame 6 months from now.

Sony are definitely the best brand choice right now (they make most of the parts for every brand except canon! So offer better performance for less money compared to others)

OP as much as I like recent mirrorless and Sony cameras I would not recommend going that route at your price range. The early mirrorless cameras have a lot of teething issues. A used DSLR is going to be the best option

You should first determine whether you want full frame or aps-c. If you opt for aps-c there's only one manufacturer that brings you a complete ecosystem and that is Fujifilm.

I'd say get a used full frame camera. That would be a much better option for landscape. A used Nikon D800 can be had very cheaply now, and that camera excels in terms of resolution and dynamic range - both of which are invaluable for landscapes.

I've been shooting landscapes on a pentax digital aps-c for years. Paired with the 16-45 f4 zoom it's a fantastic starter setup. Also, buy used caused the tech doesn't move that fast and you can get a used k3ii for dirt cheap. Plus it has a gps and star tracer tech built into the image stabilization. All around amazing camera for someone who has the time to take deliberate shots at low iso. www.flickr.com/people/blumsy for some examples of what's possible.

T7 is a good starter camera with a nice sensor and the 18-55 it's usually bundled with is decent enough. You'll want a tripod for landscapes. And if you can budget a little more you can add a Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 for about $250 used on eBay. That was my favorite landscape lens for years before going FF.

Fuck off with your FUD. Canon/Nikon are still shipping DSLR bodies/lenses, and 3rd parties are as well. And with Canon in particular when you decide to add a mirrorless body the SLR lenses work perfectly.

At his budget he has to reach too far back to get a FF body + lens. He would have to settle for a 12mp 5D and I'm sorry but the T7 sensor wins that battle easily.

If he had a larger budget, the D800 is a good recommendation.

OP here with a final update. I went with the Canon EOS Rebel T7 with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II and EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III lenses

Medium format film and a decent scanner will blow any of these cameras out of the water. Plus your pictures have the film aesthetic
