I now subscribe to the philosophy that if you have to edit a shot a lot for you to like it, it most likely wasn't very good to begin with.
Granted I 95% of the time shoot B&W and if I ever do shoot in color it's mostly on film so the amount of stuff I need to worry about it drastically reduced.
As for my editing workflow, I usually just stick to stuff you could do in a darkroom, with the occasional trip into photoshop to remove a tag on a wall or some tree branch creeping in on the edge of the frame.
Keep in mind, I'm not doing this for "purity" reasons. It's really just because those edits are really quick to do and I'd rather not be editing any longer than I need to.
The only editing that still bothers me a lot is when people add things to photos that weren't there before. And I honestly feel it stops being photography at this point and just becomes graphic design. Which is totally fine, but don't claim it's a photograph.
