Got into photography a year ago and have just been using an OM1, it's nice, but I want to try something a bit different. Discovered half frame cameras like pic related and the Olympus pen series.
Is half frame just a meme or should I just get a rangefinder?
Recommended half frames?

labs will hate you if you turn up with half frame negs and might not scan it. Get a regular rangefinder, heres a list of cheap ones.

Fucking based. I've got a Hi-Matic 9 and it's a solid camera. Only complaint I have is the crank throw distance

That's something I've not really considered. I get my negs done in town at a pretty good lab, they always have a line. I should ask them how much they'd hate me before hand instead of rolling up with 76 exposures.
I'm just intrigued by diptychs on half frames. Pic related.
Thanks for the list too by the way, a rangefinder is definitely on my list of things to get, so I'll have a look at those.

I have Canonet QL17 giii, it's decent but mine won't shoot outside of Shutter Priority mode. And when the camera IS in Sp, it won't shoot if it deems the image over/underexposed.

So as long as the camera works manually you're good, otherwise there's no exposure comp, so you're kinda fucked
The quickload system on Canonets is nice

The pen f is an slr that can focus, but I dread the thought of trying to source parts if it ever breaks. Again, the fact that I'd have to judge the focus is something I kind of like, makes me really have to think about each shot and not just burn through rolls like a sperg.

Half frame is rad. Had a Canon Demi EE17. Super sharp lens.

Getting 2x the number of frames is rad. The fact the cameras are the same size as a typical rangefinder kind of a bummer though.

Did you stick a rangefinder on it? I tried a rangefinder app for Android which takes your height and figured out how far away the thing you're pointing at is based on the angle you have to hold the phone in order to center it on the screen, and I would say that it is not a good method.

nah, in sunlight you can rarely shoot wide open with these things so you have quite the margin of error

Depends. If you plan to shoot close up portraits, ya maybe. Otherwise gotta say nah for a few reasons.

1.) Immense DoF with the 30mm lens once you hit F4ish. Stopping down to F4 or smaller gives you dummy-proof DoF.

2.) Stopping down to F8 or something gives you so much DoF even shooting closeup stuff is easy.

No, knowing a few key hyperlocal points is all you need. Using a rangefinder app like that sounds like a terrible experience.

Cheers for all of this lads, I don't normally shoot portraits. I try to shoot the normal and mundane everyday, this could be just what I need to experiment.
I do love the fact that I'll probably screw up with the focus. I want to get better and a difficulty curve like this should help. Seems like all of the working ones on ebay are in Japan and have minor fungus on the lens. Any idea where to buy from within Europe?
