They even made up stories that they have "TV detection vans" that catch the "waves" when you're watching TV and can pinpoint the apartment. They actually dressed up some vans in decals and drove them around to scare the boomers kek, and the boomers bought it.
Most European countries have a similar thing, and actually it's harder - impossible in many cases - to avoid, unlike the shitty BBC license that at this point is a voluntary donation.
Greece for instance bundles it with you electricity bill (single, public company), as a mandatory "contribution" to the public channels (the public sector ones I mean). And as long as you have an active electricity connection, you can't avoid it.
